Dr Harold S Hulbert warns returning combat veterans are prone to explosive violence when intoxicated, especially in the first four to seven years after front line service. He cites brain fatigue, malnutrition and diseases as factors and urges outdoor recreation to restore function.
Miss Marie Wilson daughter of Mr and Mrs Thomas Wilson of Hopkinton wed Donald Saathoff son of Ernest Saathoff of Hazelton in a double ring ceremony at the bride’s sister’s home. The service featured ferns and candles with a white satin gown and seed pearl accessories. A buffet for seventy five followed. The couple plan to start life after Saathoff’s upcoming military service. Memorial Park work by Kill Kare club volunteers begins April 12 with $600+ already donated.
The mourning dove arrives in Iowa in March and builds a fragile nest with large bottom holes and little anchorage. Both parents feed young with pigeon milk and defend the nest as they imitate distressed birds. Diet is mainly vegetable matter with some grain insects. Feathers show bluish gray and buff tones with purple neck iridescence.
Monticello hosted the annual sub state music contest with Friday and Saturday performances. Winners included Barbara Walker and Marjorie Thomas earning multiple first divisions. Judges came from Minnesota Iowa and Illinois with events held in the Community building and high school.
The Eastern Iowa conference indoor relay at the Iowa University field house saw three records fall. Mount Vernon won team honors with University High second, Monticello placing fourth overall and earning ribbons for Bill Hintz, Dick Shelley, Bob Gugan, and Don Newton. Ray Rieniers finished third in the mile, Don Newton fourth in the 40 yard dash.
The senior girls won the basketball tournament 45 to 22 over the junior girls ending Tuesday night. Freshmen lost to juniors 15 to 4 and sophomores fell to seniors 34 to 4. Captains were Clarice Siebels, Audrey Schrader, Car lene Winkler, and Minnie Otten.
The National Honor Society ran a booming food sale selling numerous lemons to singers on Saturday. The Monticello Band Mothers Club sold a variety of foods during both contest days and served cafeteria lunches in the gymnasium.
Betty Lou Null, Helen Mardorf, Bob Chisman, Phyllis Heyen, Beverly Harms, Jo Ann Schneider, and Wilma Wright are spotlighted for Monticello High activities. The seniors list Red Pepper membership, Glee Club, bands, choir, 4-H, NHS, FTA roles, and future plans in nursing or teaching.
Mr Eells economics students visited the Franklin factory on a sunny Monday field trip. The group studied labor and management in action while marveling at a large machine that performed precise work with minimal noise. They returned to the red brick schoolhouse feeling inspired and relieved to have escaped one whole class.
The Willow And Y has been selected as the senior class play directed by Mrs. Bess Greenley for May 17 in the high school auditorium. The three act play by John Patrick features five girls and six boys. tryouts were held this week and the cast will be named next week.
Senior and junior English classes produced essays on the theme What Can I Do For My Country. Twenty one pieces entered the cone test sponsored by the local V F W Auxiliary. judges include Mrs E B Huibergtse Mrs Simon Locher and Mrs H M Carpenter with selections from both public and parochial schools.

Center Junction guests assisted Miss Jennice Ferguson in moving into the former Dora Morgan cottage near the college. A miscellaneous shower at the Community hall honored Mrs. Glen Smith with about sixty guests and many gifts for the new bride.
