Seed Corn Must Be Labeled Under Iowa Law

Seed corn offered for sale in Iowa must carry a label showing germination percentage, month and year tested, year grown, and county and state grown. With germination lower than usual this year, dealers face selling lower quality seed, notes R H Porter of Iowa State College, and sample variation complicates labeling for large lots.

Seed Germination Variability and Tolerances for Seed Corn

Porter explains natural variability in germination tests and cites officially accepted tolerances by the Seed Analysis Association of North America. The guidelines cover different test levels from 60 percent to below 90 percent, with variations ranging from 6 to 10 percent. If repeated tests stay within limits, labeling is not necessarily incorrect. markedly lower results warrant notifying the dealer and conducting further tests.
