Bruce Eshelman of Ruthven in Palo Alto county was freed from a snow drift by using a fence post when a rusty staple flew from tied fence wire and lodged in his right eye. He continued digging out his car with a shovel after the accident.
The subject was driven to Ruthven where examination revealed eye injury severe enough to require removal, marking a drastic medical consequence from the incident.
The Monticello DeMolay basketball team played in the state DeMolay tournament in Muscatine last Thursday. They lost to Washington 23 to 19, a team that also claimed last year’s title and boasted four all state juniors. Members of the Odd Fellows and Rebekahs from Anamosa Onslow Wyoming and Center Junction joined Monticello lodges for a Wednesday evening gathering in the Kinsella building. More than a hundred attendees watched a program featuring violin duets readings duets and songs performed by local members before a picnic supper and dancing with music by a Hopkinton orchestra.
Mr and Mrs Charles H Furman of Delhi celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary at a noon dinner in the G A R hall. Both natives of Delhi attended with many friends present. Mr Furman, 81, and Mrs Furman, 79, were joined by Hattie Doolittle before marriage. Mr and Mrs F E Stimson attended the event.
Cornell college students at Mt. Vernon are home for a ten day spring vacation. Mildred Pulver visits her mother Mrs. Theodosia Pulver. Emma Hughes visits her parents Mr. and Mrs. Gid Hughes. Laura Sinclair, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. M. Sinclair, attends the Cornell college symphony orchestra on its annual spring tour through northern Iowa and Illinois.
A vesper service at the Congregational church Sunday afternoon will dedicate new hymnals donated by the late Mary I. Jarman. The same issue lists Senate submissions for postmasters James C. Bevan of Cascade Du buque county with an 82100 salary and A. Baker of Farley with a 1600 salary.
Ray 98 Williams, 50, died at a Dubuque hospital last Thursday evening from injuries after he fell and fractured his skull while cutting a tree in front of his home. Also reported a rare Bohemian waxwing sighting by Mrs. Charles Reid of Parkersburg. George Cone, 92, found dead from gas caused by an open burner at his grandson Earl Cone's Marion home. Cone was noted as Linn county's first white child born.
