Ten months of civic effort brought Cascade a town doctor and a new medical center. Len Wolfe of the second district spoke at the Legion pavilion ceremony while R L Tucker, medical center board president, chaired. The Dubuque Legion drum corps played the anthem as the event opened.
Two births reported this week include a girl for Mr and Mrs Clifford Helgens of Monticello on March 31 and a boy for Mr and Mrs Bernard Carroll of Monticello on April 2. The Cascade Legion post hosted an invocation and events as Dr William Mehri was introduced as the new Cascade medical center doctor, with a fundraising and construction update detailing $42,312 loaned and $39,000 spent to date.
The 1960 census began in Jones County with 20 enumerators amid rain and mud. Most residents filed advance census reports, and work is expected to finish by April 14 depending on road conditions. Enumerators cover Monticello Anamosa and surrounding areas, many living nearby their assignments. Some crews even traveled on horseback due to road conditions, though cowboys are in short supply.
Monticello Public Library marks National Book Week April 3 to 9 with a “wake Up and Read” theme. A floor globe memorial fund is noted alongside numerous new titles for adults and juveniles to circulate this week.
Delegates to the state presidential convention were named at the county convention held Friday in the courthouse community room. Monticello Anamosa and Wyoming area delegates and juniors were listed with alternates and regional representatives.
Robert J. Carroll and Robert A. Corsello of Cascade hold $100 1960-61 scholarships to Loras College. The awards follow the American College Testing program results. Loras College distributed ten full tuition, ten half-tuition and fifteen $100 scholarships in total.
Minister A Morris Lotte of First Congregational church Monticello will preach at the Union Lenten service Wednesday night at 8 p.m. The First Presbyterian church will lead the Liturgy. The Monticello Ministerial service sponsors the series annually.
Eclipse Lumber yard is purchased by Spahn Rose Lumber. Vincent Haag confirms the yard will be renamed Spahn Rose Lumber with Haag remaining manager and staff unchanged. The firm’s telephone number changes to HO 5 3117.
Hearn Oil and Tire Company announces an April Farm Tire Sale with a $200 farm wagon given away. The wagon is on display at Hearn's and will be awarded Saturday night April 30. Public can register multiple times, tied to farm tire purchases.
Members gathered at the Community building for the Hospital Auxiliary annual meeting. The group announced its complete charter list and named officers including President Mrs Royal Hunt and vicepresident Mrs Charles Robertson.
Monticello area will get pennant shaped no passing zone signs on all highways this fall. Current installations include highways 20 and 30 near Monticello with more on 38 151 64 and 136 this summer. Iowa uses this left side no passing sign praised by the state highway patrol chief as a top safety feature. Sign cost is about 13.64 dollars each excluding labor.
Boyd Shannon Monticello superintendent will attend the twenty eighth annual schoolmen's conference at Cornell college Mount Vernon on Saturday April 9. Eastern Iowa public school administrators will join to discuss scholastic excellence in high and elementary schools and a democratic framework. Shannon will join the Saturday afternoon discussion on elementary school excellence and the morning debate on high school scholastic improvement.
Steven Barner 18 of Martello received a six month suspended sentence in Jones county district court for operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license. He was captured by two sheriffs and four highway patrolmen last Sunday.
A pre season used farm equipment sale begins Tuesday at Ed Vanourny's John Deere store with reductions on many new machines and demonstrator tractors. The sale runs until Saturday Apr 23 and advertises the John Deere credit purchase plan.
Sheriff Lewis Dreibelbis warns drivers to test brakes after a water-logged highway incident near Anamosa. Betty O'Brien, 28, rear-ended Dale Gerst, 28, both Anamosa residents, at 7 am Thursday, veered off, struck a tree, suffering facial and leg cuts and X-rays were planned. Front-end damage to O'Brien's 1959 Chevrolet was about $600.
Final practices are underway for the three act comedy Books and Crooks to be staged Friday night at the high school auditorium. Director Paul Beck, the school speech instructor, leads the production.
Sacred Heart high school lists fourteen students on the gold honor roll for a 3.9+ scholastic standing and four in all character traits, plus thirteen on the silver honor roll with 3.0+ GPA. Names include Linda Staner, Bonnie Welter, Jean Pasker, Agnes Oaken, and others.
