J W Jarnagin reports that E McMains of New Sharon found a quarter lost in 1916 under bank fixtures during renovations. Workmen uncovered it alongside an old penny. cashier O H Pethven returned the coin to McMains with the penny as interest.
Firemen faced road conditions blamed on spring thaws as Clarion volunteers fought a blaze at the Harland Hill country residence. The engine stuck in snow, forcing foot carry of equipment. the house burned completely while Mr and Mrs Hill recovered from flu. Glen Hildreth aided a stuck car near Derby and paid two men with checks that bounced, later covering $14.20 in costs.
J Eugene Krum of Montevideo Minnesota purchases Garfe drug store in Union Hardin County ending the Garfe Pharmacy era begun by Dr Frederick Garfe in 1878. The widow of one Garfe son and her son currently run the store amid past relocations and family succession.
Ed Oxley of near Britt in Hancock County reported he feeds corn for pheasants during winter but rabbits have been stealing much of it. The issue highlights local wildlife pressure on a small farmstead.
Oxley hung a board with 36 ears to lure birds and placed a wooden self feeding box filled with shelled corn near a fodder stack. He keeps rabbits out with slats over the opening and estimates feeding 35 to 40 birds daily.
