Mr. Dennis Quinlan hires workmen to reconstruct a large Main street room into a modern movie theatre. A new front is being built opposite the business, with triple twin two way doors and a portable steel booth. Seats and equipment are on hand, signaling a soon opening as Montezuma gains a second up to date picture show.
T E Myers of Indianapolis, known as Pop, is described as the driving force behind the International 500 mile race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The piece lauds his pivotal role in assembling drivers and staging the world’s greatest sporting event, noting the May 30 race and $85,000 prize.
Prediction of huge crowds meets reality as Indianapolis Speedway nears new world record for the 1921 five century. Ten years earlier forecasts warned of alienist scrutiny for such forecasts, yet past events drew 125000 fans last year and this year’s Ninth Annual 500-mile Sweepstakes opened January 31 with strong demand.
The touring committee at a May 5 meeting postponed the club’s trip to forty towns including Montezuma. The delay is due to chiefs of houses and firms being pressed for time and unable to participate.
Montezuma plans oiling of Main Street and other busy routes to reduce dust this summer. Water is piped into Cummins Pharmacy from Barney Davey’s system, a valuable improvement. James Gilmore also sources his restaurant water from the same supply.
Sunday dinners and weekend visits fill the Colama area as Mr and MrsJohn Featherstone West Union share meals with the Woodards. Various families, including the McGilveys Sanders Dooley Platter Alkire Wright Garter Cox Ingram Braner and Smiths, spend weekends with relatives and friends. A school closing lunch and program cap a busy community week with speeches from Kelso.
Virginia May Dicken born July 12 1920 died May 7 1921 aged 9 months 25 days. She is survived by parents Mr and Mrs George Dicken sister Ruth and brothers Richard Wilbur and Harold. one sister preceded her in death nine years earlier. She suffered whooping cough briefly and congenital heart trouble from birth. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the residence. Burial followed at Oakland cemetery.
Acknowledges friends and neighbors for kindness and sympathy after a death. Special thanks extended to brother Gale and the singers Mr and Mrs Geo W Dicken.
Three cars of gypsies entered the town on Thursday afternoon. They were halted by R. T. Bailey after a telephoned message and held for the sheriff. Stolen dress and trousers were found in the cars and later the group was fined 35 dollars plus costs before being released.
Mr. and Mrs. James Forest hosted their son John and family for Sunday. Jennie Myers visited Vera Knight and others. The Featherstons hosted guests including Jennie and Helen Myers who returned from Montezuma for summer. Lela Knight and Thomas Richard visited Grant Knight. Peter Wolfe and children from Bloomingdale visited Harry Wolfe. Clyde DePrimer of Terre Haute called on Oliver Phillips's family. Mrs. John Myers and Jennie Myers visited Bloomingdale.
L Wann of Purdue visited parents Mr and Mrs Robert Wann. Pickard of Tangier died yesterday. funeral at Tangier and burial at Pilin cemetery. Ladies Aid of Howard met Belle Ephlin. June meeting at Mrs Nancy Ampson’s. Families and neighbors visited, travelers named, and farmers began pitting corn Monday.
A new Chautauqua attraction, the Miners Ghadpans, led by P. M. Tater of the M E Aid Society, launches a western tour on June 15. The program features vocal and instrumental numbers of high standard with admission 15 25 and 35 cents. Reserved seats available at Powell Pharmacy.
Wm and Jackson Linebarger of Chrisman and Paris Illinois visit their brother Levi near West Union this week. A crew works on the Masonic building repairing damage from a recent fire under James Naylor’s supervision.
The Parke Circuit Court appoints Clarence G. Powell administrator with will annexed of the estate of Mary E. Hixon late of Parke County deceased. The estate is believed solvent. May 6 1921.
The state campaigns to aid starving children in the Near East and China famine fund drives are led by Governor McCray. Thirteen district relief groups and leaders like Thomas Taggart work to meet quotas and distribute life-saving coupon books with sixty $1 coupons each. Public appeals urge rapid donations to Near East Relief or China Famine Fund, with notable subscribers including President and Mrs. Harding.
The excursions on the C. I. & W. started Sunday. Several travelers spent the day in nearby towns with friends and relatives.
We purchased fifteen head of fine baby beeves from Mr. D. W. Machin. The cattle are dry fed and weight suitable for top quality meat. We will slaughter as needed and retail the superior meat in our shop. If you want something good, come in.
