A 1921 statute seeks to curb false statements about individuals, making repeaters liable for fines and imprisonment. The article urges awareness, notes past slander in the community, and claims the law will deter calumny both locally and in the south.
Mrs. Mary Meadows aged 68 of south town died last Thursday after stomach troubles. Funeral from her residence Sunday at 2 PM led by Rev. J. C. Whitson. Burial in Opedee Cemetery near Newport. Born December 11, 1852 she left ten children, eight preceded her. Survived by husband and three sisters and two sons. She joined the Christian church at Wyoming Illinois about twenty years ago and remained faithful.
A 1921 Indiana act makes it a misdemeanor to publish false defamatory or slanderous statements about any person or to repeat statements that could harm a person’s name character or livelihood. It requires no good grounds for belief and imposes fines from twenty five to five hundred dollars plus up to sixty days in jail or state farm.
A severe drought has left town barren with vegetation dying. Lawns and grasses are scorched and nearly burned out, signaling harsh conditions and potential impact on water use and local upkeep.

Mr and Mrs J E Heath were in Rockville Saturday. Misses Mary DeMotte and Beulah Marshall spent a few days last week with Guy Conrad and wife in Illinois. Jate Harvey and family spent Sunday in Clinton with Mrs Harvey s sister Mrs Laura Gribbon. Wm Leonard and wife and Perry Leonard and family were Sunday guests of Watson Witsor and wife of Fairmount.
Dr and Mrs R L Dooley were summoned to Memphis Tennessee in the latter part of last week due to the serious illness of their cousin.
William Donovan shot and killed his wife at his Bloomingdale area farm at 6 30 on Thursday evening. He also wounded his mother in law and fled until a Saturday capture after a persistent posse. The wife had recently left him and had returned with her mother following a prior separation and beating. The inquest was held Friday morning and burial followed in Kentucky.
News notes report J and Johnston and family and Mr and Mrs Wm McCord driving new cars. The Rosedale Reporter suspends publication for lack of support signaling a decline. GC and E I railroad announces wage cuts for clerical workers six cents per hour, trainmen eight cents, and section men ten cents. Open competitive exams set for Presidential Postmasters in 29 Indiana offices on August 13 with Montezuma, Waveland among sites and Clinton among 23 cities hosting exams.
A quirky character known as the Trouble Collector roams the town with a suspicious mind chasing trouble and always finding it. In a world full of everything, people search for joy or sorrow, and he highlights that quest.
A small house west of the Silor garage was set ablaze at night. The resident found the front door open and a match lit to ignite oil soaked paper, turpentine, and gasoline nearby. A bottle of turpentine and a five gallon kerosene can were involved, with an automobile track seen outside. The motive remains unknown.
The Sanatorium Rockville hosts a tuberculosis clinic Tuesday Aug 2 at 8 pm led by Dr Jas H Staggill medical director of the Indiana Tuberculosis Association. Brought by Parke County Tuberculosis Association the event aims to locate early active TB cases statewide.
The Christian Union Mission announces a tent meeting and conference at the Baptist church in south town led by Rev. Bartlow of Lyford. The meetings begin August 6 and continue indefinitely with an open invitation to the public.

Clinton Valley lost to Paris 8 to 3. Dana and Cayuga tied 2 to 2 at Dana. Newport lost 4 to 0 to Sidell. Rockville beat New Goshen 3 to 0.
A colored camp meeting started last Sunday at Tree Spring, 24 miles north of Perrysville on the Dixie Bee Line, to last two weeks. Prominent Gadis ministers and the Jubilee Singers will lead services with refreshments on site. Sunday services at 2 30 and 7 30 P M Weekday services 7 30 P M.
Carl Maxwell returned home last week after visiting North Carolina, marking a brief trip away from home.
The Shrine Club of Indiana fifth district hosts a Turkey Run state park picnic on Sunday with stunts by each county. Zorah Temple band from Terre Haute, an exhibition drill by the Patrol, and a Shrine family dinner at noon. Shriners from across districts and states attend. Fez wearing urged for all.
