Relic Presented to House Clerk Page By Colleagues
An ancient umbrella stand and bat tree from a forties Capitol corridor, restored by clerical workers in the House of Representatives, was given to William Tyler Page, Senate clerk, as a wedding anniversary gift. Notables such as Henry Clay, Daniel Webster, John C Calhoun and John Quincy Adams used the tree, which now bears an old woolly topper once worn by Uncle Joe Cannon. Page will take the relic to his Lexington, Kentucky home.
