Operators Strike Paralyzes Western Union Network in Chicago
On August 9 1920 Chicago night shift operators of the Western Union Telegraph Company walked off the job and shut down all city wires and most leased lines. The walkout spread to day shift leaving the system nationwide with no messages moving. The dispute arose from the Los Angeles office refusal to reinstate J E Ryan amid a strike over his alleged abusive remark. A 350 member work stoppage followed after price declined to reinstate suspended workers and the strike was seen as a prelude to a broader North American stoppage.
