At Ponchatoula Louisiana high winds fanned forest fires forcing several families from swamp and farm areas south of town. The blaze burned 250 acres or more with timber losses and a stalled logging train crew suffered severe burns before a relief locomotive rescued them as loaded cars burned.
In Newark Judge Bunge authorized the Southern Cotton Oil Company to resume operations of thirty cotton seed mills and peanut shelling plants held by the company. Receivers Arthur T. Vanderbilt and Charles G. Wiig were named to manage the mills, with weekly activity reports required. Creditor claims of about 7 026 100 were registered, and the court allowed continued business under supervision of Judge Runyon.
Reports say heavy attacks by Chinese forces against the defending troops and allied lines pressed along the Shanghai area. Military authorities indicate defenses at Lungwha and surrounding fields repulsed some advances while noting ongoing pressure from the invaders.

Spokane Wash September 30 Roland Pothier former sergeant bugler in the army prepared to go on trial in federal court here on a charge arising from the death of Major Alexander Cronkhite at Camp Lewis in October 1918. His trial will be followed by the October 22 trial of Robert Rosenbluth, former army captain, indicted with him for the Cronkhite murder. The case, ending six years of investigation, centers on jurisdiction over whether Camp Lewis was government property at the time of the death. A jury will be selected and 100 jurors are being summoned as 80 witnesses from across the United States and possessions gather for the two trials.
The Oklahoma state board of agriculture barred the Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey circus from entering Oklahoma due to a foot and mouth disease outbreak in south Texas. The show, then in Texas, had been slated to visit Ardmore after Ft Worth.

Baltimore Maryland September 80 Representative John Philip Hill today pleaded not guilty to a federal indictment charging manufacturing and possessing wine and cider in violation of the law. He was released on 1000 dollar bail pending trial after November 10.
