In a campaign flare Stevenson disclosed his 10 year income tax of 211980 paid to the federal government, challenging Eisenhower to release a similar tally. The GOP faced questions over Ike's tax on Crusade in Europe while Stevenson highlighted a Bureau ruling that allowed Ike to keep most of his book income. Eisenhower worked on campaign speeches at home with Gov. Sherman Adams as aides planned no Sunday comment. Sparkman pledged a full personal disclosure on the matter in the Democratic push.
Allied artillery and warplanes hit Chinese Reds at Big Nori on the Western Front as Greek troops with U S 3rd Division hold Big Nori against repeated Red counterattacks. U S F86 jets engage MIG15s in Northwest Korea. two Reds shot down and two damaged. On East Central Front Chinese artillery and tanks support a 1500-man assault across a 10-mile stretch, one hill seized while others stall. Capitol Hill and Finger Ridge remain contested four miles east of Capitol Hill with Red attacks ongoing.
Mrs. Albert Sharp Williams executive director of United Cerebral Palsy in Louisiana will visit the Twin Cities Monday and Tuesday. She will host a 2 oclock meeting today at Hotel Francis with local leaders to form a local unit. Interested parties may contact her at the Francis Hotel today or tomorrow.
Spaht, commander of Baton Rouge Nicholson Post No. 38, told the fifth district American Legion conference in Bastrop that defeating communism requires “fighting fire with fire” and infiltrating the Chinese mainland. He urged organizing teams to emulate enemy methods, cited wartime China service, and warned of a protracted conflict with no clear victory. The event drew 200 Legionnaires and auxiliaries as Robert Farr won a key post election and district leadership was set.
Four Louisiana Democratic party leaders at a six state strategy meeting predict Louisiana will vote for Stevenson in November. One leader calls Louisiana Gov Robert Kennon a mugwump for endorsing Republican Dwight Eisenhower.
About 50 Boy Scouts and seven leaders from the Ouachita Valley Council attended a tall junior leaders training course at Northeast Louisiana State College. Directed by Charles Mettabarger from Winnsboro, the five discussion groups covered patrol organization planning meetings hiking camping and projects. L. L. Price welcomed attendees and announced campus arrangements.
Governor Adlai E. Stevenson disclosed that his income over 1942 to 1951 totaled $500,052.84 with taxes of $211,980.42 paid. Salary was $81,532.57 while most earnings came from dividends, farms, rentals, and oil leases. Net after tax stood at $288,072.42, and taxes in 1949-1951 totaled $84,459.35.
Dennis Freemont Jr. 31, of Calypso Street, was arrested by Monroe police at 4 45 am Sunday and charged with murder in the death of Charles B. Fisher 23 of 808 Calypso. Mary Godfrey 25 of 809 Calypso, Fisher’s common law wife, was arrested as material witness. Coroner J T French said death came from a gunshot wound in the right temple. Detectives say Godfrey reported Fisher threatened to kill himself. Continued on Second Page.
Roy O. Hale 69, longtime Monroe resident tied to Motor Supply Co, died in Kerrville Texas. Funeral at Mulheard Chapel Tuesday at 10 am with Dr. H L Johns officiating, burial at Riverview. Survived by wife, three daughters, two grandchildren, two nephews.
A 33-year-old housewife identified as Mrs. Johnny Boyd was in critical condition from second and third degree burns after a house fire. Fire Chief P. E. Gaudin and police reported he entered the blazing room three times to rescue her as smoke and flame filled the residence. she was carried out by firemen and likely survived due to water spray protecting her.
New Orleans political figure Frank B. Ellis announced that Rep. Sam Rayburn currently Speaker of the U S House will address citizens in Alexandria on October 15. He will speak to voters from the Third Fourth Fifth and Seventh Congressional districts, Ellis said yesterday.
President Truman denounces Eisenhower as a front man for an unholy crew of lobbyists in a whistle stop tour. He faults the Republican nominee for relying on emotion over issues and vows to root out corruption as battles loom in North Dakota Montana and Minnesota stops. Five year old Jimmie Crawford dies after a car backs over him near Choudrant. Auld's Chapel will host his funeral Tuesday at 10 a.m. Interment follows at the church cemetery. He is survived by his parents grandparents and two older brothers Rickie and Jerry.
Important history will be made on September 30 as the American Revised Standard Version of the Bible becomes available to all students. A special service at First Methodist Church, sponsored by 16 local churches, will include comparative textual readings by James L. Ewing, third, and J. Norman Coon representing Grace Episcopal and First Baptist.
Verna L DeLauche 33 of Westlake La is jailed on 2000 bond after allegedly running a red light at Louisville Avenue and Riverfront. her 1952 Chevrolet struck Thomas E May 41 of Monroe, who died of a fractured skull and crushed chest. May, a hardware firm worker and former Air Corps sergeant, was killed as his 1950 Crosley overturned. witnesses corroborate the red light violation. May's funeral was held at Mulhearn's Chapel with burial at Riverview Cemetery. May is survived by wife Mildred Hooper May, father Frank May, grandmother Tennie Thomas, a brother and three sisters.
