Caldwell Hart Indicted by U S Jury in Louisiana Conspiracy

New Orleans Seaplane Flier Forced Down Near Appomattox

John Chapman of New Orleans attempting to set a world distance record for light seaplanes in a nonstop flight from New Orleans to New York was forced to land at dusk near Appomattox because of bad weather. The 800 mile goal is from Miami to New York. Chapman unofficially exceeded the 800 mile mark with 850 miles but the record status was unclear.

Three indicted men face October trial in New Orleans

District Attorney Charles A. Byrne said contractors Monte Hart architect Leon C. Weiss and Dr. James Monroe Smith would likely go to trial late in October on embezzlement charges totaling sixty two thousand dollars in what prosecutors call the double move of a charity hospital building. The indictment says the hospital was moved to make room for an LSU dental facility but later returned when the dental project was scrapped.

The inter American conference neutrality sub committee drafts a general neutrality declaration to keep peace in the western hemisphere and cushion nations from Europe’s war. Jury returns same indictments in Ouachita Parish

After a four week special session the Ouachita parish grand jury refiled the same indictments in open court. District Attorney Hawthorne said no new indictments or changes were made. The 25 count indictment against J Lloyd Warren and five counts of bribery against W D Dark and L J Melton were included, along with charges against Dr Harvey Dillion. The fall term regular grand jury is to meet Monday.

Paris Air Alarm Any Boyce Becomes Realistic Threat

Parisians hid in air raid shelters for 33 minutes after a high flying plane caused the warning. The alert began at 11 22 a m and the all clear came at 11 55 a m. In London Britain and France discussed a German Soviet peace overture but Britain remained committed to the war. Berlin reported five of six British planes were shot down attempting to attack a German naval unit off Helgoland. Moscow announced a treaty with Russia and Estonia giving military and economic provisions, with bases and troops allowed on Estonian soil for ten years.
