Memphis report says Thomas Illiams, a Black man, died from gunshot wounds inflicted by unknown parties near Barrettville after reportedly attempting to assault a white woman. A coroner's jury ruled the death the result of unknown shooters. Williams had fled after the incident and was found in Pleasant Union church yard two miles away.

Negro Killed by Missouri Pacific Train in City
Noah Williams, 70, colored, was struck and killed by the No. 101 Sunshine Special southbound train near the coal chute where Eleventh street meets Missouri Pacific tracks. The deaf man walked along the middle of the tracks as the whistle blew and the engine and crew, including Engineer R Emer son and Conductor R Day, tried to avert the crash. The cowcatcher threw him to the west side. left leg broken and skull fractured. Train stopped quickly. Witnesses say Williams did not hear warnings.
