Valve Covers Removed On Fated Airship Shenandoah
Lakehurst N J Sept 28 All covers on automatic heliou valves of the airship Shenandoah were removed on a rapid ascent during the September 3 storm. Lt Roland G Mayer construction officer testified at the naval court of inquiry stating he removed covers from two valves and ordered removal on two more. The remaining four were uncovered before departure. Mayer denied the covers prevented helium loss, saying they kept gas bags from sucking in air. He noted cells cupped and flapped during the ship’s fall and later inspected a cell he thought was full at 85 percent. He described a progressive breakup as wires snapped and the engine car separated before the hull and control car failed.
