The Associated Press reports 35 fatalities from Sunday plane crashes across four states. among the dead were 15 Johnson & Johnson subsidiary children, four pharmaceutical executives and their wives en route to a Virginia resort meeting. A KC135 tanker crash near Alpena left five survivors. Other incidents occurred in Illinois Colorado and Virginia with various crews and passengers perishing.
Crash sites circled show four deadly accidents in one day. In Hot Springs Virginia a jet owned by Johnson & Johnson killed 11. Alpena Michigan an Air Force transport crash killed 15 with five injured. Near Peoria Illinois a light plane killed three. Steamboat Springs Colorado a private plane hit fuel tanks killing six.
West Monroe voters decide Saturday whether to raise the city sales tax from four to five cents to fund a government complex including jail police station courthouse city hall and community center. Mayor Bert Hatten urges turnout, cites $5.5 million over 15 years and a reserve to cover shortfalls without raising property taxes.
Mayor W L Howard announced the Twin City Queen excursion boat will be dry docked until further notice as Monroe seeks cost cuts. The boat bought in 1968 for 64000 has lost 77009 since purchase, with 1975-76 audit showing 6698 operating loss and 3243 depreciation. Booking stops after November 5, and future use depends on city finances and committee recommendation.
