An estimated 1,500 people perished in a powerful typhoon that struck northern Japan. The disaster includes 58 Americans either dead or missing, 14 confirmed among the recovered, and 44 among the missing. Waves sank five ferries in Tsugaru Straits and an intense storm swept through Iwanai area on Hokkaido.
Emiko Champagne, 24, wife of Sgt. J C Champagne of Homer, La., survived a capsized ferry near Hakodate Japan after the Toyo Maru turned and sank. She describes clinging to debris, waves striking her, and losing visas on the ship while pleading for news of her husband, among the missing.

James Brewer aged 16 and Benjamin West McGrew aged 17 face murder charges after admitting to beating 18 month old Tommy Harris with belts and fists over three hours. Autopsy cites brain hemorrhage as cause. The child was deemed backward for not walking.
A six member Senate panel found Senator Joseph McCarthy treated the Senate with contempt and urged censure on two broad charges. It said three other charges do not justify censure. The Senate plans a special session on November 8 to decide.
