A tropical storm strengthens while a disturbance tracks toward the Florida coast. The system, located about 200 miles south of Cuba, shows increasing hurricane potential as it moves northwest.
Caution advised as typhoons sweep toward Japan with estimates approaching 500 fatalities. The note hints at widespread damage and rising casualties across coastal areas and signals intensified storm activity in the western Caribbean and adjacent seas.
The weather bureau reported the steamer Gatun experienced full hurricane winds this morning about 75 miles east of the island of Jamaica as it proceeded cautiously toward Jacksonville.

Westport Connecticut, September 27. A crash between two New Haven freight trains on the main line left one engineman dead and three others injured, one seriously. John Sheehan died in the fire after the collision with the rear end of the Maine Bullet. Injured were E. J. McGrady, 38, William Geary, 62, and William T. Hughes, 42.

The Louisiana public service commission approved a Fields recommendation to lower the minimum gas rate near West Monroe for a year from October 1. The minimum drops to 1.50 dollars in Brownville Calhoun road Calhoun road extension and Splane addition with a 5 dollar maximum meter deposit and no other charges changed.
Esther Magill an 18 year old woman linked to Newell P Sherman testified about clandestine meetings with the choir-singing scoutmaster accused of drowning his wife. William Whitfield Woods of Chicago led the Institute of American Meat Packers urging that small businesses depend on the farm administration's stance on a possible next year corn hog adjustment program.
In New Orleans on September 27, Sam and Charles Alonzo brothers held as accessories in the slaying of Frank Bruno night club proprietor and ex-convict have been released on instructions from Assistant District Attorney Conrad Meyer Jr. Bruno was found strangled near City Park with a cord around his neck and was last seen alive in a saloon operated by Sam Alonzo. The wife of Sam Alonzo, detained for immigration, was also released.
