From West Palm Beach Florida a Red Cross appeal seeks 12 million dollars for hurricane recovery after a storm that killed over 2300 and displaced 12200. Flooded areas around Lake Okeechobee saw cremations of 165 bodies near Belle Glade as relief efforts continue.
The Mammoth Oil company assets including equipment at Teapot Dome will be put up for sale in Casper on October 5 to satisfy a government judgment of about 3.009 million dollars. The seized property is appraised at 15 thousand dollars. Mammoth was a subsidiary of Sinclair Oil.
In Ketchikan Alaska on September 26 observers linked a red smoke haze and sun and moon distortions to a nearby volcanic eruption thought to have caused seismic shocks across the United States last Saturday. Steamship captains reported no shocks locally while suggesting activity off western Aleutian islands.
An ammonia generator blast at the Wilburn Ice Company plant in New Orleans killed Alvin Zerner, 35, and injured three others, one seriously. The blast damaged the one story facility, with $20 000 in damage, and fumes blocked entry for workers and police for a time.
C E McKenzie in charge of Legion Memorial Home dedication plans announces the Standard Refinery band of Baton Rouge will participate. The letter from Standard Oil officials says director J E Jimmie Snee is away and arrangements will be set upon his return. Snee commands the Louisiana American Legion department and has many local friends.
New York September 26 radio listings show a rally of actors authors and artists league backing Smith on the red network from WEAF at 8 30 p m central time with Irving Berlin singing and George M Cohan and Willie Collier as emcee aided by Gen Buck Eddie Dowling. A Republican talk by Senator Frederick H Gillett airs at 6 30 p m central time from WOR, with Judge John R B McClure at 7 p m from WOV.
County Prosecutor says a masked robed gang called night riders has terrorized Barton for months. John Eberhardt coal mine foreman is charged with riotous conspiracy and accused of leading beatings and planned lynching of Goldie Wheeler and Berry. Witnesses describe victims hung by their toes, and expect more arrests as baron citizens testify.
Mayor Arnold Bernstein chairs the Tensas Basin Flood Control Association and reports a letter from Senator Jos E Ransdell pledging full support. He endorses opposing fuse plug spillways, thorough surveys between Baton Rouge and Cape Girardeau for reservoir sites, and fair funding for flowage rights including land values drainage and rail and highway trestles over floodways.
The government of Premier Ekman in Sweden resigned today following elections that reduced the governing central bloc, with Foreign Minister Loefgren among those losing seats.
The Elks presented the annual silver loving cup to a prominent Monroe man, president of Central Savings Bank & Trust, for outstanding civic efforts in aviation. He helped establish Selman field east of the city and began his career as a News-Star newsboy before rising to bank president in 1922. He also led the Louisiana Bankers Association as president and served on its executive committee.
In Chicago on September 26, J. Clarke Dean Jr. and Mrs. Josephine Seeberger Lasher wed in Crown Point July 25 despite a court injunction. The couple, who had planned to wed after her divorce from Howard Lasher, split after Dean found his bride missing at his home. Police could not locate Mrs. Lasher, who was staying with friends as her parents’ home proved fruitless.
A humorous dialect piece titled Hambone's Meditations by J P Alley presents exaggerated rural speech about regional characters and daily observations. The scan preserves old style spelling and cadence reflecting Black English dialect humor from a bygone era.
In Arkansas, the lower house passed a resolution requiring candidates for the 1929 session to pledge loyalty to the Democratic ticket. Rev. A. S. Hollywood scene writer director A. B. Barringer was hospitalized after a fight at his Barringer home last night. His cook, George Mullen, was held on suspicion of mayhem. Barringer suffered a large chunk bitten from his cheek and likely permanent disfigurement.
Serious flood conditions are reported in the state of Jalisco where at least fifteen people have been killed in the collapse of houses. A large section of the city of Guadalajara was flooded yesterday and the streets were transformed into raging rivers, paralyzing traffic for several hours.
A two fold event the annual meeting of the Chamber of Commerce and the Memphis goodwill party banquet at Hotel Virginia drew 60 to 70 Memphians and 175 guests. Mayor Bernstein welcomed guests as J M Cobb led the chamber. Dr E R Lloyd urged dairying as a basis for local wealth and Travis Oliver received the Elks loving cup for community service.
A special Red Cross meeting organized a drive to meet a 1500 parish quota for hurricane relief in Florida and Porto Rico. A committee led by C C Boardman will oversee districts, with banks to host funds and calls for large late week totals to show strong local support.
The Smith-Robinson fund in this state section edges past $197.50 with total receipts of $197.50. Donations may be sent by mail or messenger to The Monroe News-Star and will be acknowledged promptly. The News-Star is the designated organ for acknowledgments for the Fifth Congressional District.
Police Captain Charles Cohen and 22 policemen were jailed on extortion bribery and conspiracy charges. Seven sergeants and two city hall detectives were among those arrested, with several other captains and a ward leader already in custody. Evidence from a December federal raid on a south Philadelphia still linked payments to Cohen and district officers.
Chicago September 26 Congressman Walter Newton of Minnesota head of the Republican speakers bureau declared that Mrs Mabel Walker Willebrandt is sponsored by the Republican National Committee in her campaign addresses He added that his only regret is she cannot give more time to the campaign The statement was made in an interview with newspaper men during Mrs Willebrandt’s visit to Western Republican campaign headquarters
