German communique reports the sinking of a British destroyer by a submarine with no details. German leaders anticipate prolonged war on the western front as Polish campaign ends.
Carl Choisser publisher of the Benton Evening News was shot three times in the stomach on the Benton public square. The assailant was Dr. George W. Gore Sr, Choisser's uncle by marriage and father of George W. Gore Jr, whom Choisser represented in a murder case set for October 16.
New York radio host George McCoy met a caller who claimed to be Neville Chamberlain, then produced papers proving he was the Queen Mary’s sergeant at arms. The piece notes Pattonsburg and interior reports include a crocheting contest win, a nail driving event, and a Black Hills scam involving arsenic eggs sold to journalists from the East.
Governor Earl K. Long announced he will not run for state central Democratic chairman or national committeeman. A large heat wave pushed temperatures above 100 degrees for days as boats capsized off Point Magu and Cabrillo beach, with rescuers pulling ashore two girls while others remain unaccounted for.

Pickett led the cafeteria for years amid campus reorganization after resignations and indictments of former leaders.
Mr and Mrs R P Runyon of Sondheimer died when their car rear ended a truck on highway 65 nine miles north of Tallulah at 2 AM on Sunday Dooley the car driver and the truck driver sustained minor injuries The couple left two young children Funeral services were held at McGehee Ark Dooley and Runyon worked for Louis Chambers levee construction near Sondheimer

He is in federal custody serving a 60 month sentence for mail fraud pending appeal.
