In Topeka, Kansas farmers split on selling U S wheat to Russia. Most oppose the policy as political window dressing, while Lud Strand supports shipments to Russia and China, arguing it preserves favorable exchange and should not be blocked by ideology. Critics warn it could mask failure to create an adequate wheat program and may promote communism.
A 28 year old West Monroe woman Muriel G Wallace was injured in a two car collision in a parking lot. She was thrown from her car and taken to St Francis Hospital by Kilpatrick Ambulance. Gloria Ann Dixon 20 of 304 North Third Street West Monroe drove the other car and was uninjured. The crash occurred about 9 am behind First National Bank. No charges filed pending further investigation. Wallace was x rayed for back injuries and the extent of her injuries was not immediately known.
East Carroll Parish sheriff s department has charged Joe Ferguson of West Monroe with stealing a 15 horsepower outboard motor and a 16 foot aluminum boat from the Mississippi River about May 15. Ferguson, 42, was arrested Monday in West Monroe with a juvenile taken into custody. The property belonged to Lee Johnson of Transylvania. Ferguson is held on 750 bond.
Funeral services are planned for Mrs. Joh annah T. Billen of Monroe and Belleville with burial at Mulhearn chapel arrangements. The infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James M. Rylee of West Monroe also to be buried at Salem Cemetery. Mrs. Irmane Roark of West Monroe dies after illness with services at First Baptist Church Hasley Cemetery interment. Survivors listed include children grandchildren and regional relatives across Illinois Missouri and Arkansas.
Sophia Etta Brown 84 of Rayville died this morning in a Winnsboro rest home. Funeral services under Mulhearn's of Rayville are pending in Mulhearn Chapel Rayville, with interment at Presbyterian Cemetery Alto. Survivors: three sons Arthur Dunn John Buddy Brown. two daughters Mary Counts Ella Mae Thurman. one brother Newt Townsend. eight grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. Also details Homer Hobbs 79 of West Monroe died Monday at St. Francis Hospital. Burial will be Walnut Grove Cemetery near West Monroe under Hixson Brothers. Survivors: Nora Hobbs widow. two sons James B. Hobbs Cecil C. Hobbs. two daughters Claudine Hogge Opal Winslow. five brothers Curt Horace Aubrey Hobbs Eual Walter. two sisters Bertha Beeson Verna Futch. five grandchildren.
President Kennedy designated all Texas areas hit by Hurricane Cindy as disaster zones eligible for federal aid. Sen. Ralph Yarborough announced the move, with no funds allocated yet while surveys are completed.
Police investigate burglaries at two north Monroe residences, Mrs Nell Guice at 404 McKinley and Mrs Myrtis Pitts at 104 Sycamore, both entered before 3 30 or 4 p m Monday. Items stolen include change from a small bank and small groceries. Police also report speeding and red light violations among multiple arrests.
At 5 03 am in Portland Zoo an elephant calf was born to Tuy Hoa, the fourth calf in 12 years. The sex was not yet known, described as mouse colored and lighter than siblings Packy Me Tu and an unnamed calf, sired by Thonglaw.
West Monroe police booked three persons with speeding early today. Clayton M Dickerson 50 listed as care of the Louisiana Highway Department charged with speeding 45 mph in a 25 zone on Montgomery Street not driving a state vehicle. Charlie McWilliams 31 charged with 55 mph in a 35 mph zone on Cypress Street. Harriet O Purphery 37 Route 4 Box 442 charged with 60 mph in a 35 mph zone on Cypress Street. Investigation underway in theft of a car owned by Bill Harnkess 701 N 7th St.
Europe offered a small 1.3 cent cut from a 13.43 cent duty on U S poultry but demanded the United States drop talk of further negotiations. The six Common Market ministers endorsed the move after brief talks, while U S negotiator Herter called the cut inadequate.
