A coroner's jury in Ina indicts Rev. Lawrence M. Hight and Mrs. Elsie Sweetin for murder by arsenic in the death of Wilford S. Sweetin. Both prisoners are jailed out of county, awaiting the October grand jury, with Mrs. Sweetin in Salem and Hight in Nashville.
Syracuse N Y Sept 24 Democrats wait for the convention opening with Governor Smith still undecided on running against delegates on the scene. Uncertainty remains whether the Ku Klux Klan will be named in the platform.
Dr. H. W. Evans imperial wizard spoke to Klansmen on the second day of the Ku Klux Klan national convention in Kansas City. Although the Klan legislative proceedings are secret, copies of his address were released to the press.
United States Senator Walter Edge defeated Hamilton Kean for the Republican nomination, leading 193,797 to 146,629 with 2,173 of 2,939 districts reported. The race highlighted liberal versus prohibition interests, with Kean backed by the Anti-Saloon League and Edge criticized for past ties.
Detroit reports the marriage of Charles L. Woodall known as Tiger Catcher to Dorothy Sweitzer a former vaudeville and musical comedy actress. They wed at the home of L A Blue Detroit first baseman with Mrs Woodall using the name Dorothy Buckley prior to her retirement this spring.
Geneva dispatch reports Baron Pierre de Coubertin indicating Germany will be admitted to the 1928 Amsterdam Olympic Games and the event will not be curtailed in extent according to an article in the upcoming Revue Olympique.
New York dated Sept 24 report notes Democratic candidate Davis vows to persist in accusing corrupt and impotent public officials. He sends a direct retort to former Attorney General Daugherty defending his charge of government corruption and calls for honesty over political games.
Burglars towed a heavy safe from the Caldwell State Bank at Chatham using a mobile derrick but failed to open it before a time lock stopped the loot. The safe weighed 4,500 pounds and held about $400, according to bank officials.

Baton Rouge announces that Will Atkinson of Shreveport, brother of LSU figure Thomas W. Atkinson, will chair the new Louisiana highway committee. Former Sheriff Frank E. David of Alexandria and Jones Irvine of New Orleans to serve as the other two members.
In New York on September 24 Eleanor Elaine Lee Harris lost her bid to compel former National City Bank vice president Harris to provide $12,500 to reopen court proceedings that led to the annulment of their marriage.
Imperial Wizard Hiram Wesley Evans told a Kansas City audience that the Ku Klux Klan is the last refuge of American patriotism and that Klansmen and Klanswomen are the salt of the earth. He proclaimed the white race as vital to civilization and asserted Nordic and Anglo Saxon peoples lead in intelligence while denouncing immigration as a threat amplifying the movement. Page five.
Dr Charles Elmer Sawyer former personal physician to the late President Harding died suddenly of heart disease at White Oak farm Marion Ohio. Interment planned in Marion cemetery with funeral likely Friday. Notables including Secretary Hughes and Mrs Harding to attend.
In Mt. Vernon Illinois on September 24 Rev. Lawrence Hight remained jailed in Nashville while Mrs. Elsie Sweetin was held in Salem as the Sweetin Hight plot confessions unfold. State's Attorney Thompson prepared to present to the grand jury with possible indictments for murder. The Southern Illinois Methodist Conference debated action, with Bishop Feete saying a committee would investigate after court action.
Army fliers are expected to conclude their around the world flight in Seattle on Friday unless weather delays them. A telegram from Lieutenant Lowell H. Smith, commander of the flight, confirms the plan to end the journey here.
Lionel L. Jones announces new aerial photography program to estimate Louisiana rice acreage. A government plane and observer will photograph rice farms with three exposures per mile. After Louisiana, similar surveys will cover Arkansas Texas and California. H G Chalkley cites 1924 crop reports expecting 1 690 000 barrels less rice nationally than 1928.
Vin cente Williams, a Honduran provisional government representative in New Orleans, says a cable from San Pedro Sula reports General Ferrera abandoning the coastal campaign and fleeing toward the mountains. The note claims Ferrera is disorganized and pursued, with peace expected to be reestablished.
Senator Caraway of Arkansas told the Davis-Bryan club that Wilbur’s recall from his western tour followed a speech he planned to give in Denver on September 30. He quoted excerpts on voting rights for negroes and mocked Wilbur’s regional knowledge, noting the speech had been released for advance publication. Wilbur canceled the trip and the Denver speech was recalled.
The New York Republican state convention met in Rochester and organized with Nathaniel S. Elsberg as temporary chairman. The session adjourned until tomorrow in honor of A. D. Rice, a Black employee at the state party headquarters.

Shanghai reports quiet guns at 10 p m but Kiangsu forces press Chekiang defenses with reinforcements from Lisho to Tsingpu and eight armored French machine gun cars sent forward. Mukden telegram says Chang Tso lin again aims for Peking with airmen avoiding foreign legations.
Crawford Love, wealthy Autauga County landowner living near Selma, Alabama, was brought to Selma in seven prohibition officers custody and arraigned before U S Commissioner Gamble on bootlegging charges. The case was moved to the Montgomery district court and Love posted a $1,000 bond after a distillery and corn liquor were found on his property.
The Prince of Wales arrived in Winnipeg to begin a three hour stop en route to his ranch at High River. He planned to continue his journey after the brief visit.
A fire of undetermined origin today destroyed six Morgan College buildings in Baltimore, one of the nation’s largest Negro educational institutions. Loss estimated at $60,000.
