Pittsburgh Sept 22 The CIO United Steelworkers mailed formal notices to about 1400 firms seeking a prompt wage increase for roughly one million members. President Philip Murray announced the step after a Steelworkers executive board meeting and said specifics would come from the wage policy committee meeting October 4–5. Murray urged a mutually satisfactory agreement at the earliest date as Alcoa already offered a 10 percent rise to its 45,000 employees.

New York reports the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis now projects 30,000 polio cases this year, up from 25,000. The U.S. Public Health Service cites a 22 percent weekly rise to Sept. 16, with 2,138 new cases last week and 17,370 this year. If reached, the total would rank second to last year’s 42,173.
In Korea near Taegu, near the hilltop city Kasan, the charred, bullet-ridden body of an American lieutenant with hands tied behind his back was found. A First Corps spokesman said the officer was shot, doused with fuel oil, and set afire.
An 18 year old bride to be Jacquelyn Cadow hides from a man who has taunted her with a funeral march and threatened to kill her before her October wedding. Her mother Mrs Clifford Catlow said the girl will marry October first despite the threat. Sheriff Leon Vial and deputies guarded the home but left as she disappeared. Paradis lies 25 miles west of New Orleans.
William N. Oatis of the Associated Press Prague bureau was told he must leave Czechoslovakia within a week as his three month foreign correspondent accreditation expires. Bedrich Runge said Oatis was no longer persona grata due to lack of objectivity in reporting Czech affairs and that the decision is personal.

Water Valley Mississippi September 22 two retired railroad men and old friends clashed on Main Street in a fatal shooting. C D Murray seventy two a retired Illinois Central engineer was shot with a .25 caliber pistol. The plan offers 10 cent per hour raise retroactive to June 12 plus a cost of living bonus and a further five cent raise next June 1.
In Luton England on September 22 a hospital bulletin reported George Bernard Shaw age 94 is in satisfactory condition after a thigh fracture and kidney ailment. He broke his thigh in a fall September 10 and had surgery the next day and a second operation for the kidney issue yesterday.
