The former Chilean ambassador Orlando Letelier and colleague Ronnie Moffitt were killed when a car bomb exploded near the Chilean Embassy in Washington. Mrs Moffitt's husband Michael Moffitt was seriously injured. police described extensive vehicle damage and scorched pavement at Sheridan Circle. Letelier had served as foreign minister and top diplomat under Allende. Pinochet later revoked Letelier's citizenship.
