Blaze Devastates Napa Valley Town Calistoga California

A wind driven fire swept into Calistoga Napa County destroying 35 to 50 homes and threatening surrounding areas. About 7 000 acres of timber burned with winds up to 70 mph. Evacuations occurred overnight with no casualties reported. Police credited surrounding vineyards with helping slow the flames.

XB70A Plane Makes Fiery Flight Debut

Edwards AFB Calif AP The XB70A the United States most ambitious bomber had a troubled first flight ending with a fiery landing Tires on both sides of the landing gear blew out and burned as the 185 foot craft touched down after a takeoff from Palmdale The jet encountered gear and engine issues but no danger to the fuselage Pilot Al White and copilot Lt Col Joe Cotton retraced the gear after takeoff but a leak forced gear retraction Most of the flight kept the gear down keeping speed below plan Several hundred observers watched a blaze forming around the landing area Twenty months behind schedule due to funding cuts and tech problems the XB70A may never enter bomber service

West Monroe Man Killed by Gunshot Found Outside Home

Ralph R. Taylor Sr., 66, died from a head gunshot after leaving his West Monroe residence to check a noise. West Monroe police identified him and opened an investigation. His wife reported the 10 p.m. excursion. autopsy ongoing. Funeral services set for Kilpatrick Funeral Home with burial at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Pineville. Survivors include his wife Alice, son Ralph Jr., sister Margaret Taylor, and mother Eudora Taylor.
