Prague officials disclose that the government has yielded to pressure from London and Paris and accepted Hitler’s demands as the British and French envoys were notified. Crowds of more than 5,000 cheered in the streets while police tightened security and business owners prepared to close.
A night assault by about 35 Sudeten German free corps hit the Weis customs house near Eger. One Czechoslovak soldier wounded, at least one attacker believed injured, and a German rifle with civilian hats found at dawn. A detachment of 40 Czechoslovak soldiers armed with hand grenades responded.
WPA Administrator Harry Hopkins told the senate campaign expenditures committee that there is no substantiation of broad attempts by WPA officials to coerce relief workers to back Senator Barkley of Kentucky for re nomination. Of 15 complaints, only one charge of improper political activity was backed by WPA evidence. James Boddie, a district WPA director in Kentucky, reportedly handed lists of WPA workers who were voters to county campaign chairs. Hopkins said steps were taken to warn Boddie and his overall record remains sound.
Edward Howard, 60, of Philadelphia, is set for his 882nd donation as he pursues 1000 free blood transfusions before death. A 15 year donor, he also claims the strength to drive a ten penny nail into oak with a fist and pull it out with teeth.
Coastal sections from Wilmington to Virginia feared tropical storm effects as a hurricane moved north over the Atlantic. Advisories warned of dangerous gales and high tides. center 225 miles south of Cape Hatteras and 250 to 275 miles east of Charleston as ships sought shelter and ports prepared, though forecasters said the storm would likely miss the coast.
Nellie Rae Sims two year old daughter of Mr and Mrs W H Sims died from severe burns after playing with matches in Choudrant Louisiana The funeral was held at Pleasant Grove church with Rev E A Burgess officiating Interment followed at a nearby cemetery President Howard Smith of the Bank of Choudrant transported the child to Ruston sanitarium where she died She is survived by her parents and one brother.
Dr. Waldo L. Schmitt informs President Roosevelt that specimens from the southern cruise include two new fish species and one or two new shells. Roosevelt hosted a luncheon to hear results as Schmitt reports two fish the president caught, a 20 pound rainbow runner and a 3 pound blue crevalry, are the largest of their species on record and to be kept at the National Museum.
In Geneva on September 21 Maxim Litvinoff accused Britain and France of capitulating to Hitler and said Russia offered military help to defend Czechoslovakia. He warned that without France honoring the French Czechoslovak pact Moscow would not assist Prague. He criticized Western powers for avoiding war today for a larger one tomorrow.
A city wide drive to trace a mysterious ailment sickened 104 people and killed a 53 year old Elmwood Park railroad worker Earl Bennison. By Sept 21 cases reached Elmwood Park and Chicago's north west, with symptoms including diarrhea vomiting and chills. Health officer Dr James Moxon said the outbreak has run its course and many cases recovered.
Richlands Vermont September 21 A storekeeper who has been blind for 20 years hopes to buy an eye for a "reasonable sum" to see the Pittsburgh Pirates face the New York Yankees in the World Series. He has 134 offers from 39 states and Canada and is considering three. One offer is $400 from L E Lawson of North Tazewell Virginia. Lawson says he needs the money. offers go up to 25 000. Seven women have offered eyes. the rest are men aged 18 to 62. Warner lost his sight in a premature explosion on a road job.
In New York's 16th district primaries, Rep John J O Connors loses the Democratic nomination to James H Fay but wins the Republican primary. The Associated Press notes other state results including Curley defeating Hurley in Massachusetts and Barbour securing the Republican nomination in New Jersey.
In unofficial returns from 1762 precincts Curley leads the Democratic primary with about 210,114 votes against Hurley 167,996 Kelly 191,85 and Russell 31,160 while Republican Frederick Butler trails Saltonstall and Whitcomb. Curley’s Boston edge helps his bid to face Leverett Saltonstall in November.
In Milwaukee on September 21 a three way governor race formed from incomplete returns. La Follette led the Progressive field with 94 823 votes while Henry trailed in Democratic tallies. Heil led Republicans with 83 159 votes, Wiley led the senatorial GOP contest, and Duffy faced no opposition in the Democratic nomination.
