The Senate approved President Truman's pick John Carson as federal trade commissioner by 45 to 25. He warns absentees may help southern opponents block anti-lynching and anti-poll tax measures, risking delay until next session. Ellender vows to oppose the permanent fair employment practices commission.
Two West Monroe men injured in a crash involving a fire truck and a gravel truck were hospitalized after the collision at Stella and North Third. Fireman Aubrey Taylor and Ray Jordan remained in serious condition, while West Monroe police investigated. A Southern Railway passenger train derailed at Newton North Carolina injuring about 50 aboard six cars and a locomotive. Two Negro cooks in the diner were trapped likely dead. Rescue crews used steel-cutting gear while ambulances rushed victims to Catawba General Hospital. The wreck occurred near 5:10 p.m. as No 15 neared Newton station.
Angered miners skip shift as part of a pension and welfare protest in western Pennsylvania and nearby coal fields. Up to 480,000 UMW workers may be idle as John L. Lewis pressures a new contract. some anthracite pits and U S Steel subsidiaries report no workers. First walkout hits the Isabella mine of Weirton Coal.

Washington September 19 The aging Tom Connally of Texas returns as the lead senator in a debate over the 1 314 010 000 foreign arms program He says victory is likely and predicts a key amendment by Senator George to slash aid for Western Europe from 1 000 990 down to 300 000 000 will be rejected Connally as committee chair previously steered approval of the foreign economic recovery program and the North Atlantic pact He expects four days of debate and vows to oppose amendments
United Nations watchers expect the U N to confront China’s war in the near term with Canton authorities possibly presenting charges to the assembly or security council. A U S spokesman hinted broad backing for U N backed aid programs as part of an anti communism effort in Asia and Europe amid talks on independence for colonies and a little assembly.
New York Sept 19 Emil Schram president of the New York Stock Exchange said the exchange would be open today and that the valuation of the pound and other currencies and the closing of several stock exchanges abroad would have no effect on trading here He declined to comment further on foreign financial developments.
