Colorado Springs dispatch reports Private John J. Lazar served in the army for months while the draft board sent induction notices. He learns the error involved a San Francisco neighbor who had been serving in his place, highlighting a mixup in military records.
The postman delivered an induction notice to two houses too early last spring, resulting in a timing issue for the affected residents. No further details on recipients or consequences are provided.
In San Francisco a department store trial of night shopping hours drew police to maintain order as the hosiery department unexpectedly sold out its entire sale line within fifteen minutes. The event surprised managers and shoppers, highlighting a strong demand for late hours.

In Bend Oregon on September 18 an old captured German cannon mounted for 20 years was scraped for paint revealing it was made in Derby Connecticut in 1902.
Fred Co Garvin a 20 year old shoe salesman from Scottsbluff Nebraska hiked to Denver to volunteer in the navy. Recruiters balked at his size 14 shoes but a telegram from Washington enabled the navy to stretch a point and issue shoes two sizes larger than regulation for him.
