A spectacular explosion erupts shortly after liftoff at Cape Canaveral. Debris and rocket parts scatter from the blazing blast as emergency crews respond. AP Wirephoto accompanies the dramatic scene.
The Soviet leader arrived to a wall to wall reception with about 200000 people on streets and a restrained but polite crowd along the parade route. Moscow radio Tass provided play by play as Izvestia noted only one cloud Nixon in the background.
The United Nations Assembly debates Red China seating with India pushing for immediate action. Khrushchev’s anticipated speech heightens East West tensions as Chinese Nationalists predict a setback for admitting Peiping. China’s delegation may boycott Khrushchev’s address and Tsiang will refuse a Hammarskjold dinner invitation.
The first meeting of the Fifth District Visiting Teachers for the current school session was held Tuesday at the Ouachita Parish office. Kermit Walters, program chairman, outlined activities for the year and two meetings were planned for the census program. Speakers to be invited include a judge, psychiatrist and district attorney. Attendees listed include Walter Richardson, Malcolm Stone, Ira Reeves, Clifford Roberts, Miss Bess Lance, Miss Gladys Gregg, B. F. Barron, Ker mit Walters, Mrs. Jim Ford, Miss Doris Gaston, Miss Fleona Brins made, Robert L. Little, Robert L. Seegers, Mrs. Lottie T. Wilkins, Derrall Foreman, Mrs. Georgia P. Pinkston and Marvin Bass.
Story County Deputy Sheriff John Stark said McDaniel apparently strangled both victims, grabbing Mrs. Larson around the neck and using a knotted cloth on infant Kimary Ann. He claimed to have dragged them into a bedroom and placed them on separate beds before leaving the house.
The test aimed to study space flight effects on biological systems to aid manned missions. Launches were postponed due to technical problems after earlier engine sputtering. The failure followed a Soviet moon launch timed with Khrushchev's U.S. visit, while the Jupiter cone held over a day’s supply for the tiny space travelers.

Two Georgetown students attempting to unfurl a Tyrants Not Welcome USA sign are dispersed as the Soviet premiere’s motorcade passes. Cardinal Cushing leads a 15,000 strong prayer at Bunker Hill while a memorial mass is held in Richmond Maine. A Hungarian refugee is found handcuffed to a fence at the United Nations in New York and charged with disorderly conduct.
In Laos a UN fact finding mission was authorized by the Security Council with the Soviet Union opposing. Khrushchev proposed shifting to a Western Far Eastern powers conference. The State Department condemned that idea as unnecessary and disruptive as Eisenhower and Khrushchev seek better understanding. They agreed to continue discussions in a friendly spirit at Camp David with detailed debates planned for the next talks.
Khrushchev visited the Agriculture Department's Beltsville research center in Maryland where Ezra Benson welcomed him and urged that food can be an agency for peace. He viewed Beltsville turkeys and quipped that more turkeys benefit both Soviet and capitalist worlds as reporters prepared questions for a written Q and A. This marked his first full scale U.S. speech since arriving Tuesday.
The report links DeSapio’s grip on Tammany Hall to a push by Lehman Roo sevelt finletter forces and the Powell Harlem district victory over a Tammany-backed incumbent. Lehman warned DeSapio’s days as boss may be numbered amid a feud over the 1954 senatorial nomination.
The Soviet reader rejects renewed American misperceptions of Soviet leaders and people. He notes that Mr. Nixon has formed an incorrect image of Soviet political figures, stating that his views are not accurate and reflecting on U S impressions.
Tax Assessor Bert Coverdale and Coroner Dr. John P. Burton among officials named. With Clerk R. D. Farr stepping down, B. S. McRaney gains unopposed status. Seven House candidates include Gibbs and Hathaway. five Senate contenders named. Police Jury has 39 filings with several wards listing multiple qualifiers. Ouachita Parish Justice of the Peace and Constable races list numerous candidates across wards.
Four parish officers faced no opposition in Ouachita parish elections with three seeking re election. Sheriff Bailey Grant Tax Assessor Bert Coverdale and Coroner Dr John P Burton were unopposed for re election and B S McRaney sought first term as clerk of court succeeding R Dean Farr.
Khrushchev asked the two if they argued. Benson answered no, and the farmer couple claimed there were no disputes in the farm field, asserting they are both good farmers.
