Secretary of State Henry Kissinger meets President Julius Nyerere in Dar es Salaam amid Tanzania's call for swift American steps to end white minority rule in southern Africa. Nyerere denounces Vorster as the butcher of Soweto and urges support for African freedom fighters while acknowledging peaceful transfer may be blocked by racists. The arrival follows a vociferous Tanzanian government statement and protests against Kissinger's talks with Vorster.
A class action seeks to stop the November 2 runoff for Quachita Parish School Board and push for new elections for all six seats before year end. Benton Frost leads the petition with attorney Paul Henry Kidd after obtaining a show cause order from Judge Fred Fudickar Jr. Frost finished third in District B behind Bill Demoss and J A Rutledge in the August primary.
Daniel Patrick Moynihan edged Bella Abzug in New York Democratic primaries while James Buckley won the Republican contest. Moynihan led throughout and Abzug vowed to pursue a recount as 99 percent of districts reported. Buckley captured about 70 percent over Peter Peyser in the GOP race as turnout ran 15 percent.
Louisiana Tech University and Grambling State University announce across the board faculty raises this year with five percent as the maximum allowed by state law. Tech reports rising enrollment while Grambling cites retrenchment and department head recommendations for varying increases.
