Richland parish officers used bloodhounds to pursue a burglar who broke into the United States post office at Holly Ridge Louisiana and fled with a bag of night mail. Some contents were later found behind the railroad station. The night’s break in occurred before 10 p.m. with a window entry and deputies from Ouachita parish assisting in the investigation.
Ten persons were injured in a three way crash on Pontchartrain bridge near New Orleans. State police said a van rear ended an automobile, pushing it into another parked car. Three hospitalized, seven treated and released. Names include Warren Parker Slidell and Nils Sorensen Oslo Norway NC State College students, with driver George Abston charged with reckless driving.
Attorney General McGrath filed a federal suit in New York to dissolve Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company’s national chain. The action seeks to separate manufacturing and processing from buying and selling, and to create seven independent retail food chains. It also proposes dissolving Atlantic Commission Company.
Chicago negotiators report a settlement in reach for 1,500 AFL printers striking five major daily papers for 22 months over a contract. The proposed deal raises weekly wages by 10 dollars, below the union's initial 15-dollar demand. Union officers and Local 16 plan to present the pact to members for a Sunday vote after last night’s approval by the ITU.
Washington dispatch reports Sherman Minton of Indiana was picked by President Truman to join the Supreme Court. Ouachita Parish faces lagging educational facilities despite being among the state's wealthiest parishes. Baton Rouge Sept 15 The Thomas H Harris Scholarship Foundation announced 108 college and university stipends ranging from 50 to 125 dollars per semester. Recipients include Barbara Barre Eve lyn Boggs Elinor Brown Barbara Burris Elise A Dupuis Gloria Cornish Alvin Couvillion Erwinville Richard W Couvillion and many others across LSU Northwestern State University and Louisiana Tech. The awards honor the late state superintendent of education and emphasize scholastic ability character leadership and purpose.
President Murray urged U S Steel to accept the presidential board’s peace plan. President Truman voiced hope negotiations progress toward a settlement as U S Steel rejects the board’s formula without bargaining. Murray pressed Fairless to back the findings, signaling a tense bargaining stance.
Republican statisticians estimate the 1950 elections could yield substantial gains for the GOP. Based on Pennsylvania special election results where John P. Saylor won a previously Democratic seat, office of Rep. Leonard W. Hall projects about 80 additional House seats if national voting mirrors that district’s 95.8 percent turnout. The pre election House stood 261 Democrats, 170 Republicans, one American Labor and three vacancies.
Archie Ely Sumrall 69 died in Monroe hospital from injuries suffered in an auto crash near Lake Providence Monday night. Funeral plans were incomplete. A Jones county native who moved to East Carroll in 1924, he left a wife who died in 1929. Survived by four children Herman Sumrall Monroe Carl Sumrall Lake Providence Homer Sumrall Dallas and twelve grandchildren. He was a Baptist Church member in Lake Providence.
The first new official Louisiana map in six years has been released. J. Lester White, director of the state department of public works, said the map includes more than 400 changes and corrections.
Monroe police officers who worked long hours on the $4,000 Jewel Box robbery say they were not told the jewels were recovered on September 6. The loot was found in a police car, taken to headquarters, and returned to The Jewel Box on September 8, while officers continued the investigation.
John L. Lewis and southern soft coal interests move toward a showdown over nonpayment to the welfare pension royalty. Lewis failed to pressure James D. Francis and Island Creek Pond Creek to pay overdue installments, while Cleveland Trust says it holds no controlling stake. Pocahontas Fuel and Tierney interests also withheld July payments as nearly 20 million tons yearly production faces funding shortfalls.
