Negro Hurt When Struck By Automobile On Route 80

Sam Evans of West Monroe suffered a fractured leg when an automobile driven by Tom Coleman of West Monroe struck him Sunday night on route 80 three miles east of Calhoun at about 7:30. The state police report the accident unavoidable. Coleman said he could not see the road ahead due to heavy rain and darkness while driving slowly. He was not charged and took Evans to a local hospital for treatment.

Monroe firefighters handle three Sunday calls

Fire units responded to a 11:35 a.m. grass blaze at 120 Malvern Street caused by burning trash. A 9:15 p.m. fire badly damaged a vacant dwelling at 3209 Polk Street of unknown origin. At 9:43 p.m. crews dealt with a live wire at Pine and North Second streets.
