American and French troops opened a twenty mile offensive in Lorraine near the German border aimed at eradicating the St Mihiel salient south east of Verdun. Metz citadel lies about fifteen miles northeast of Pont a Mousson as a possible further objective.
German forces fall back on both sides of the St Mihiel salient as American troops press forward. Reported by Reuters the Americans are intensely eager and fighting magnificently in the region.
American forces opened an attack on German positions at 9 o clock along the Lorraine front. The advance progressed along the line with some prisoners taken. by 10 o'clock the second wave held several German first line points with little initial opposition.
Washington reports the Eighty-Second division formed from Tennessee Alabama and Georgia troops is in motion on the Lorraine front where today the Franco American assault began.
On the Lorraine front the French and American forces planned a bold assault on German positions around St Michael salient. A four hour bombardment preceded a two pronged attack on twelve and eight mile fronts with heavy Franco American artillery and air support. Weather is reported fine and initial reports say the operation is successful.
Paris reports on September 12 that the German plan to form a supreme line of defense named the Harsail line runs from Antwerp to Metz. Marcel Putin in Echo de Paris notes forts at Antwerp are being strengthened.
London reports the British have crossed the Canal du Nord northwest of Havrin court as part of Cambrai defenses. They reached the western bank east and north of Moeuvres and established positions there.
An Associated Press dispatch from France notes a German airman killed when his plane was shot down by American forces. the pilot was identified as a woman, indicating Germany used female military aviators.
Honorable Ben C. Dawkins of Monroe leads opponents for the state supreme court associate justice in the second primary. He claims a margin of 560 to 1000 votes and asserts no chance for his rival Herold’s nomination if he remains unsatisfied. Dawkins thanks voters and urges confidence as results from the second district tally arrive.
Premier Lloyd George spoke in Manchester on September 12 saying only heart failure by Britain can stop a real victory.
