A Baltimore and Ohio passenger train struck a stalled school bus carrying 26 to 28 children. Seven youths aged 8 to 16 died, nineteen injured, eleven seriously. City council urges parents to enforce safe bus behavior and punctuality to prevent repeats.
Venice Italy AP Aristotel Onassis arrives in Venice with Maria Callas from Milan. They board his yacht Christina. Onassis had been in Paris where he denied causing Callas Menechini breakup. He is 55 and Miss Callas 40.
Dr T H Bud Gaharan qualified with the LaSalle Parish Democratic Executive Committee on Thursday as a candidate for state representative. He seeks re election to a second term in the legislature.
Washington era leaders remain undefeated in veto battles as Eisenhower loses a veto fight breaking a stretch. The list now includes Washington Madison Monroe Jackson Polk Buchanan Lincoln McKinley and Harding with limited vetoes among early presidents. Roosevelt tops vetoes with 6311, nine overridden. Johnson had 15 overrides out of 28. Truman 12 overrides of 250.
Princess Beatrix began a 10 day U S tour tracing Hudson Valley Dutch roots and planned meetings with President Eisenhower. She toured New York stores, swam daily aboard ship, and joined dances and movies showing an informal 20 year old demeanor.
John Slattery admitted killing his 4 year old son Jeremiah after beating him and hiding the body in a suitcase. He later disposed of the corpse in a Queens trash can and was jailed on homicide charges.
Snodgrass argues retirement should depend on willingness or fitness to work not age. He notes more 53-year olds than 75-year-olds lack value and cites lower absenteeism among elder workers. He quips he would not hire anyone under 65 even for free.
Eddie Fisher and Elizabeth Taylor arrived in New York from a combined honeymoon and business trip with Taylor's three children two dogs and 59 pieces of luggage. They checked customs then went to the Drake Hotel as Taylor wrapped up motion picture work in Europe and Fisher did British TV appearances. The couple wed May 12 in Las Vegas. Taylor noted the honeymoon is not over yet.
Four Detroit police officers were injured when a group of teenage boys clashed with them after an officer was struck with a chair during an attempt to break up a reported gang gathering. Five youths, all Negroes, were arrested for felonious assault. two were treated at a hospital and returned to custody.
Henry S. McDonald 69 of Ouachita Parish died at his home near Eros on Friday. He was a retired farmer and lifelong resident. Funeral services Sunday at Clark Springs Baptist Church near Eros with burial in the church cemetery, under Hixson Brothers Funeral Home. Survived by wife Martha S. McDonald, three sons Brawner B. of West Monroe, Harry O. and James S. of Monroe. three daughters Mildred Salley of New Orleans, Paris Ratcliff of Tyler Town Miss, and Happy McDonald of Monroe. a sister Sally Noah of Rayville. 13 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
Khrushchev visits the United States with President Eisenhower hosting. Mrs. Eisenhower declines greeting duties in line with a personal custom. The itinerary includes Washington welcomes, private luncheons, White House dinners, and a series of city visits from Beltsville to Des Moines with stops at farms, universities, and industry figures.
Therman C. Roark, a native Ward 7 resident of La Salle Parish, announced candidacy for police jury member from Ward 7. He operates a garage in Jena, is married to Lillia Lee Poole, has four children, and runs as an independent candidate.
An Associated Press state survey shows unemployment from the steel strike concentrated in major producing regions with Pennsylvania reporting about 65 000 idle workers and West Virginia 27 000. Kentucky 15 000 and Ohio over 20 000 idle while New England and Texas see scattered effects and construction projects feel delays as ordered steel cannot be stockpiled.
