Walter Straus 32 son of Oscar Straus was found dead in a Baltimore hotel suite with three sleeping pill containers nearby and a note asking for two sealed letters to be sent to his wife. His widow in New York said he had no apparent reason to take his life after a recent army discharge.
General Jonathan M. Wainwright prepares to recount the fall of Corregidor and the prison horrors that followed. He will submit his full report to the War Department when ready, after receiving the Medal of Honor from President Truman and speaking at a White House ceremony. MacArthur ordered arrests of 39 others from Tojo's cabinet and allied forces to assume control across Japan.
Tokyo dispatch reports Hideki Tojo attempted suicide at his suburban home as Allied pursuit of war crimes intensified. Doctors treated him with plasma, giving a 30 to 50 percent chance, while Tojo expressed remorse for Asia and preferred death to trial.
A small Allied party reports 19000 women and children crowded in five Batavia internment camps in Java. About 2000 internees are said to be seriously ill. Allied medical officers are delivering medicines and relief to the internees and prisoners.
Rep. Knutson of Minnesota denounces U S aid to Britain as a plan to socialize its economy by seizing private business. He questions Congress and President Truman for financing foreign expropriation and suggests Britain fund such measures or seek Moscow money.
