Friday features the Young Matrons Embroidery Club on the West Side hosted by Mrs. J. S. Dozier. The column notes residents traveling, returning from New Orleans, Detroit, Ruston, and Jackson, with school plans, visits, and family updates across Monroe, Shreveport, Oak Ridge, and other local towns.
Summer in Bird's Eye Lake peaks with locals returning home while Mrs M F P Weake enjoys New Orleans. Longview Texas beckons Mr and Mrs Duff as others depart for Ruston and State Normal, with several young women enrolling. The West Monroe School opens with 167 pupils, five teachers, a new piano, and planned auditorium seating for 800 as grounds are developed.
Mothers of Marines at the Philadelphia Navy Yard feared their sons were dead or ill. General Barnett ordered an inquiry and found Quaker City residents showered the Marines with visits dances dinners and tours. Locals opened homes and clubs and arranged social events showing the troops ample hospitality.
Mrs. E. F. Milner, a Corsicana practical nurse, says Tanlac restored her health after a decade of decline. She describes relief from constant headaches, regained strength to walk and perform housework, and a gain of at least fifteen pounds after two bottles. Tanlac sold in Monroe by Allen's Pharmacy and Calvert's Drug Store.
Liberty Bond buyers who paid in full have received interim certificates while awaiting final bonds. Holders may exchange interim certificates for future issues possibly with higher interest. deliveries of definite bonds will start promptly. The GOV Official Bulletin notes conversion rights and current eligibility pending Congressional action.
The Treasury announces provisions from Circular No. 78 allowing exchange of bonds by denomination and form with charges or penalties. Registered and coupon bonds may be exchanged after October 1 1917 or later as designated, while full paid interim certificates are interchangeable without charge. Holders are advised to retain interim certificates until a designated date as Congress acts on registration, interest rates, and tax status. Deliveries will begin soon as Bureau facilities permit due to wartime strains.
St Anacinth Academy Monroe Louisiana will resume classes for girls and small boys on Monday September ord. The curriculum includes English literature and commercial branches with special music advantages. For details apply to The Sister Superior.
Mrs. C. A. Barnes of Charleston, Hl, writes she has a high opinion of Chamberlain's Tablets for biliousness and as a laxative. She says they are mild and pleasant to use and her brother has had satisfactory results as well. Advt.
Racing begins in Maryland as the Hartford Agricultural and Breeders Association inaugurates a ten day autumn meeting at Havre de Grace ending September 2. The show moves to Laurel afterward with the Havre de Grace program featuring ten stakes offering substantial value and attention from prominent American and Canadian horsemen and riders.
Vivian Martin headlines the Lyceum tomorrow in Little Miss Optimist a newsie inspired play noted for her bright outlook. The event features scenes filmed near a newspaper delivery door and includes her role as a tea shop girl plus a cooking demonstration from her Vivian Martin Cooking Chatter column. Ford Weekly is also shown with the program.
West to Boomsheep Growing Chicago September meet is the first step in wool preparedness. The National Sheep and Wool Bureau brings wool growers from the middle West to a two day conference. A campaign to educate agriculturists on wool profitability is planned and farmers from central southern eastern states are urged to join in a profitable patriotic movement to revive sheep farming amid reduced western pasture land.
