High air force officers said Alexandria will serve as a model air center during the Second army Third army maneuvers. Esler field at Camp Beauregard will host a camouflaged fighter base and the city park auditorium becomes an elaborate air raid information center. 80 fighters from March Field will arrive to participate in the exercise with paratroopers from Fort Benning to test maneuver operations.
Germany rejects Washington’s claim that the U-boat was the aggressor and says the destroyer Greer fired torpedoes first. Berlin sources downplay diplomatic steps while accusing U S policy of driving toward war. A Berlin paper labels Roosevelt’s statements as a blatant lie.
Governor Sam Jones announced unanimous full senate approval of the loan he sought for the state finance department. The measure faced criticism from anti administration Senator Joe T. Cawthorn, who highlighted concerns raised on the stump.
Governor Sam Jones defended a 540000 loan approved by the Louisiana legislature to fund the state finance department for relief payments pensions and other expenses. He accused Senator Joe T Cawthorn of pressuring opposition and claimed North Louisiana distaste for Bob Maestri. The vote passed unanimously in the senate with 13 defectors among 22 senators who later joined the majority.
Secretary of Agriculture Wickard announced a 1942 farm program aiming for the largest production in American history to meet the nation’s food needs and aid allies. It targets pork, eggs, evaporated milk, dry skim milk, cheese, poultry, vegetables, peanuts, and soybeans while maintaining controls on cotton, wheat and tobacco.
Charles E. Honce of the Associated Press told members of the New York State Publishers Association that Americans are better informed on war news than any other people. Landon a CCC camp member received 30 days for disorderly conduct after urging the crowd and cursing.
Eight people were hurt in six accidents around the Twin Cities as army traffic disrupted weekend travel. Grover Takewell of Swartz, badly injured, remained unconscious Monday. Elton Houck and Annie Beth Clark also injured in a head on collision on Highway 80 in Lafourche swamp.
Reporter witnesses first field test of the 30-ton M-3 tank with the First Armored division in Louisiana. The journalist describes riding inside the gunner’s cradle at 25 mph, smashing through trees and ditches while noting the tank’s superior firepower and features compared with lighter models.
Speaker Sam Rayburn expects quick conference and committee agreement on the three and a half billion dollar tax bill. He said there is little difference between the House and Senate versions and a report should be ready in the first week of the session.

Washington reports the senate adjourned in honor of Sara Delano Roosevelt, 86, mother of the president, who died at Hyde Park New York yesterday. A unanimous resolution expressing sorrow and sympathy was adopted. Douglas B. Cornell filed the dispatch from Hyde Park.
Hyde Park report says President Roosevelt altered travel plans on a premonition to see his mother. The Rev. Frank Wilson of St. James Episcopal Church described Roosevelt learning of his mother’s death just after his arrival, noting the strong mother son bond and her warning to stay well to avoid burdening him.
A nation joined its chief executive in mourning as Mrs. Sara Delano Roosevelt died. Her son, Franklin D. Roosevelt, served as president three times, marking a pivotal era in American history.
In Detroit on September 8 68 year old George Fox who had been legally dead for six years after a court in Chicora Pennsylvania declared him dead finally died in Receiving Hospital. His daughter Mrs Thelma Ritzert of Chicora was summoned to learn of his death and inheritance after Fox revealed his identity to Charles Kibler rooming-house proprietor years earlier.
State employment services placed 499000 persons in defense and non defense jobs in July, 62 percent above a year earlier and six percent above June. For the first seven months of 1941 about 3900000 jobs were filled, versus 1900000 in 1940. Unemployment benefits reached 29300000 in July with about 752500 checks.
Germans admit bitter resistance from Leningrad defenders while Red Army reports a counteroffensive gaining momentum on the central front near Moscow. Stuka bombers strike, Berlin endures the war's heaviest raid by night, and a German general is said killed as towns are recaptured. meanwhile mass deportations of Germans from the Volga region to Siberia are announced to guard against sabotage.
The 193? cotton crop forecast for the year stands at 10 710 000 bales based on Sept 1 conditions down from 10 817 000 in August. Weather and boll weevil damage reduced yields in the central belt, offset slightly by gains in Oklahoma Texas New Mexico Virginia and North Carolina. The September 1 condition is 65 percent of normal with an estimated 226.8 pounds per acre, down from 72 percent and 224.4 pounds previously.

P W G Taggert assistant director of the Louisiana state experiment stations and in charge of sugar cane research since 1923 has been appointed director of the stations effective September 15 He succeeds Dr C T Dowell who served as director since 1929 and becomes professor of agronomy on the agriculture teaching faculty.
