Washington Sept. 8 The Democratic tariff revision bill was reported from the committee of the whole and may be passed tonight or Tuesday. Debates and amendments were set for today including wool, cotton, metal schedules and the income tax. Senators La Follette Norris Jones and Cummins led proposed changes while Norris pressed a coffee valorization idea.
Washington reports that the Clarke cotton future amendment was delayed to take effect on Sept 1, 1914 after Finance Committee motion by John Sharp Williams. The Senate passed the change without debate as Thornton Rans were dining, with Sen Simmons noting no backstory and no protests from the Box.

The forty first annual convention of the American Association of Passenger Agents opened in St Paul with members from major U S and Canadian railways attending. A W Fritot of Jacksonville division passenger agent of the Atlantic Coast Line called the gathering to order. Tomorrow night many members and wives will depart on a Yellowstone National Park trip.

In Lamar County Darius Reed shot a squirrel and climbed a tree to get it. Amog Pennington, 65, approached with a shotgun and, mistaking Reed for a bear, fired. Reed was mortally wounded and not expected to survive.

Baton Rouge September 8 The administration program for the Louisiana special session and constitutional convention outlines five possible days of work for the General Assembly four bills to action and a November 10 constitutional convention in Baton Rouge with a fifteen day limit. Representative Joseph Generelly of New Orleans is slated to introduce the main measure authorizing the convention and representation is set at one per parish and one for New Orleans ward. Generelly earlier led the New Orleans city delegation in 1912 and later aligned with the Hall faction after an independence bid for Orleans Parish district attorney.

Richmond Texas Sept 8 Eight negro convicts suffocated in an underground Staite prison farm cell Saturday night prompting strong indignation and a state ordered investigation backed by the governor. Twelve prisoners punished for laziness occupied a nine by seven feet cell sealed by a double ceiling with air holes and floor vents. Temperature neared one hundred at the time. Hearing set for next Wednesday.
The cotton market opened strongly with first prices 44 points above Saturday's close. Washington reports that the cotton tax bill will be amended to take effect next September, boosting early trading in New York.
The Monroe organization announces appointees to solicit funds for the colored fair in New Orleans from Sept 22 to 29. Appointees are J. M. Rowland John W. Frost and M. J. Foster who are responsible for any money collected. M J Foster president Ella Spyker secretary.

Syracuse opening of the Grand Circuit meeting at the State Fair attracts leading stables and jockeys along with turf enthusiasts. Nineteen events span five days with $24,900 for trotters and $15,206 for pacers, highlighted by a $10,000 Empire State purse for the 2:14 trot.
Ottawa Sept 8 The suit seeking annulment of the lease to Dead Man's Island calls for hearing in the Exchequer Court. The action challenges the island lease on the ground that the paper was never properly signed. The dispute is long standing and the island was part of the Vancouver lumber property on the water.

Coaticook Sept. 8 Lawyer Jerome arrived today for an afternoon trial on a gambling charge. A small crowd greeted him in silence. It is predicted he will be discharged because of a technicality.
Parish High School opened with the largest attendance in its history as Mrs J R Tidwell enrolled fifty pupils in the second grade and many were turned away from other grades. The building lacks room for more teachers and capacity appears reached. Judge Joe Mangham hosts Mr Will Pierson as a guest. Mr J Lowe has a 1914 Kissel for demonstration. twin boys arrive for Mr and Mrs Faulkner Heard.
