Westbrook Pegler argues in New York that unionism is an enemy of labor and a corruption of government. He claims working people include loafers and rascals, urging opposition to electing a labor government and warning of union bosses using inflated currency to tempt workers.
In Cleveland on September 7, Mayor Burke joined calls to ban closed-course racing if dangers cannot be removed after the fatal crash of pilot Bill Odom and two others. Berea officials consider injunctions as directors prepare to meet next week to evaluate holding the 1950 event amid ongoing grief for Odom and the mother and child killed in the crash. Funeral plans proceed for Odom in Columbus Miss, and for Mrs. Laird and Craig Laird in Minneapolis.
District Attorney Kenneth Kock says a jealous motive led 40 year old Robert Shupp to shoot Marian Walck of Weissport three times on a lonely Lehigh Valley road. He then naped in his lodging before driving around town and triggering neighbor calls by the car noise. A murder charge will be filed.

Senator John Foster Dulles said he would gladly accept the Republican nomination to run for the New York Senate seat in the special 1950 election to fill the Wagner vacancy. Governor Dewey named him to the post. Lehman may seek the Democratic nomination.
Vienna report says 22 year old Sidney Schwartz of Brooklyn disappeared after being seen talking to a Soviet sentry on September 5 near the Linz Urfahr Danube bridge the checkpoint between American and Soviet zones. He had told a hotel clerk he planned a bicycle ride into the Soviet area. No further trace has been found.
A 29 year old former Monroe used car dealer Wesley Davis was arrested on three warrants for theft totaling 75 to 125 dollars. He is jailed in default of a 4250 dollar bond after being taken in at Clear Lake and returned to Monroe. Warrants allege down payment fraud on buyers in Ouachita and Richland parishes.
Bonn reports the first German government since Hitler convened with the bundesrat and the bundestag set to begin. Karl Arnold was elected president of the bundesrat with ten of eleven states voting for him. Heinrich Kopf and Gebhard Mueller named vice presidents of the upper house.
J C Strickland director of high school public relations at Northwestern State College will become principal of Ouachita Parish High School. The parish school board approved the appointment at a Wednesday meeting after a motion by Superintendent Mack Avants. The board also named Shelby Braley acting assistant principal and Miss Theresia Cormier choir director, with Miss Cormier endorsed by former director Velma Willey. Truman McCrea will be band director, succeeding Walter Minniear. The board restructured finance duties, approved several insurance policies, and authorized purchases of three steel bodied buses and cafeteria equipment. They authorized tree cutting at Watson school grounds and delayed next year’s budget discussion. Resignations of several staff were accepted and a motion to pay medical bills for injuries to children was rejected. Continued on Thirteenth Page.
Horace V. Fluker 56 prominent insurance executive and head of Fluker Insurance Agency died at his home 2010 North Fourth Street in Monroe after a period of illness. Funeral plans pending relatives distant. Interment planned in family plot at old City Cemetery. Hixson Brothers Funeral Home in charge. Pallbearers named. Fluker, son of the late B. K. Fluker, served as city tax collector’s era adviser, attended Monroe schools, played for city and parish teams, and was a 156th infantry veteran in World War One. He helped form the Fluker Insurance Agency in 1926 and reorganized in 1943. (Continued on Thirteenth Page)
Missouri Pacific officials in Monroe said freight service ceased at midnight Tuesday due to a nationwide strike threat. About 350 to 400 employees could be affected if the strike materializes, with freight tasks reassigned to lines able to handle them. Passengers and mail may shift to other carriers, while mail service will be handled by Railway Mail Service at the post office.
Canton reports recapture of villages from Communist forces driving toward the Canton Hankow railroad. Ground was reclaimed up to 20 miles west of Jucheng, with a Nationalist raid on Jucheng led by a former magistrate. Reports say five Communist divisions prepare to attack Anjen. Reds fortify border areas and reinforcements surge in Shensi.
Eisenhower talks like a Republican fueling speculation he may seek the 1952 GOP nomination. Senators Ives and Sparkman predict his name could surface at the party convention, while Truman remains noncommittal about a run. Eisenhower’s Labor Day address in St Louis echoed middle of the road GOP themes opposing a welfare state and federal education aid.
Craig Rice, a prolific mystery writer, lies in critical condition at Santa Monica Hospital after an unconscious spell. Doctor Vincent De Paulo suspects sleeping pill overdose though none were found. Rice, 41, recently released after a sanity investigation. She claimed she did not intend to end her life, saying she wanted her estranged husband to hear about it. Rice is divorcing her fourth husband, Henry de Mott, 29, a radio producer, on grounds of cruelty.
In Washington the United States Britain and Canada began pivotal talks on Britain's financial disaster. Bevin and Snyder led delegations in a cautious start, aiming for harmony of political financial and economic actions to lay a foundation for future peace.
A giant hurricane lingered in the open Atlantic off Bermuda, moving east northeast at 6 to 8 mph. Winds 100 to 115 mph, hurricane force outward 100 miles. Ships warned to avoid the storm. Bermuda on alert. military planes evacuated. The system was first detected near Puerto Rico and is the season’s fourth hurricane.
In New York on September 7 a crowd of about 700 pickets confronted the British delegation led by Foreign Minister Ernest Bevin and Chancellor Sir Stafford Cripps as they left the Mauretania for Washington. Protesters shouted anti British and Irish republican slogans, demanded the release of 14 Irish Republican Army prisoners, and declared an American Irish minuteman stance.
Several hundred area residents are driving to Delhi Thursday for a noon barbecue marking a soil conservation tour across 11 northeast Louisiana parishes. The event is led by the Louisiana Delta Council with four soil conservation districts, with Congressman Otto E. Passman delivering the keynote and senators Russell Long and Lt Governor William Dodd also slated to attend. The Caldwell parish leg launches at 8:30 a.m. at the Columbia courthouse, then tours 1,200 acres of drained land before the Delhi barbecue, followed by parish activities and a list of local officials and participants.
