A Japanese broadcast disclosed the identities of six admirals who died in action or from illness. The Yokosuka station said Admiral Matsuji Ishuuin and Admirals Ryuzo Wakatsuki Wakizaka Suetada Itogawa and Kitamura died in action, while Admiral Kuranosuke Yanagizawa died from illness contracted at sea.
Allied land sea and air forces and Tito's partisans have begun a combined offensive in Yugoslavia with the Soviet push to seal German escape routes from the Balkans. Russian troops reportedly crossed Bulgaria into Greece reaching the Turkish frontier after a rapid 160 mile advance. another Russian tank column neared Sofia. Bulgaria, declaring war on Russia, faces ongoing Soviet pressure and German actions.
Senatorial candidate Griffin Hawkins of Lake Charles attacked regimentation in a radio address on WNOE. He urged preserving constitutional liberties after victory, opposed government by directives, called for limits on presidential tenure, and vowed to restore judicial review and taxpayer protections.
Soviet forces reportedly fight within 90 miles of Belgrade and advance along the Danube toward Orsova. In Poland a major offensive narrows on Warsaw with two Russian army groups attacking near Ostroleka and Narew, while Red Star tallies German losses and claims massive German army destruction.
Allied reports say French forces captured Chalon sur Saone and Givry while pushing toward the Doubs valley near Switzerland. Americans advanced north to Poligny Arbeis and Bletterans in the upper Saone and Doubs regions as German resistance slowed.

London reports the battle against German robot bombs is nearly over with defenses and Allied forces having reduced the threat along the coast. Lt Col Edwin Sandys cites 2,900 Allied airmen and 450 planes lost, and 2,300 of 8,000 bombs reaching targets since June 12, while 1,900 robots shot down by fighters.
Emperor Hirohito told the Diet that the war situation is growing more intense as American attacks mount and possible invasion looms. Premier Koiso warned no idle person can be tolerated and called for total mobilization to safeguard national policy and the Yamato race.
The 1944 Louisiana Funeral Directors Association convention and Louisiana Board of Embalmers meeting will convene Monday at Hotel Virginia. New Orleans president Walter Ransom and Monroe past president Louis L. Peters, who also heads the embalmers board, will lead sessions. The event, last held in 1942 at Lake Charles, expects about 75 attendees with one day of meetings and a noon reception by the Casket Manufacturers Association.
Washington reports that campaign managers for state or federal candidates may receive additional gasoline starting September 11. To qualify, the manager must be officially appointed, travel must be necessary for the campaign, represent a qualified candidate, and have no alternative transportation.
Approximately $37,000 was scattered along the Canadian Pacific railway tracks when a mail bag tossed from a moving train to the station platform split open. Postal officials said most of the money intended for a lumber company payroll had been recovered.

Secretary of War Stimson reported that American casualties in the Normandy invasion were about half of earlier estimates through the first three weeks. He said July and August losses were slightly less than projected, with total U S casualties in all theaters through August 21 at 305 795 for the army and 59 964 for the Navy, yielding a combined 365 759.
Soviet veterans report the 68 ton Royal Tiger operation south of Warsaw failed to break Polish defenses. Four were set ablaze and ten captured alive after German forces attacked Krakow with 14 such tanks. The monster's weight and size hindered its maneuverability, making it a prime target for Soviet armor.
