Police seek a man described as a maniac who threatened to bomb Cardinal Dougherty’s Merion residence unless $50,000 was paid. The letter was received by the head of the Philadelphia diocese and a guard was posted at the cardinal’s home.

Desperado Hunt Watson alias Jim Yarrell, a notorious north Louisiana bandit, was shot and killed by guard Arnold Davis during a desperate attempt to escape from the Angola state penitentiary farm in a corn field. Watson had a long history of bank robberies and escapes dating from 1931, including prior recaptures and a jailbreak with two other convicts.
