Israel vows to hold Arab allies responsible for the Munich Olympic murders and demand actions against international terrorist bases. Premier Meir thanks West Germany for hostage rescue efforts while expressing regret over the operation's failure as the nation mourns 11 dead of its Olympic delegation.
Alabama Governor George Wallace who is partially paralyzed was chosen as chairman at the Southern Governors Conference in Hilton Head Island. Virgin Islands Governor Melvin Evans was elected vice chair, becoming the first Black to hold the post while South Carolina Governor John West stepped aside to allow Wallace to take the chair. The group urged Congress to enact a national desegregation policy and to resist busing, with Evans voting for desegregation but opposing antibusing language.
