George Fink Dies in Monroe at 62 Services Pending

Mon ore attorney George Fink died Sunday evening at his home on Loop Road at age 62. Mulhearn Funeral Home will handle arrangements. He practiced in Monroe since 1932 and held multiple civic and professional posts in Louisiana and Ouachita Parish. He is survived by his widow, three daughters, three brothers, two sisters, and four grandchildren.

American Troop Strength Drops In South Vietnam

The US Command reports American troops in Vietnam at 216,700 after a 60 percent drop from a peak of 543,400. The count includes 170,400 Army, 35,700 Air Force, 10,000 Navy, 500 Marines, and 100 Coast Guard. The plan aims for 184,000 by December 1, with possible reduction to 175,000 by month’s end. Nine B52s bombed northern targets near the DMZ while patrols and airlift squadron inactivations reduce forces. Local attacks killed five civilians and wounded 25, with additional casualties among soldiers and police.

Six Inch Rains Hit New Orleans Area

The National Weather Service forecast more rain for the New Orleans area after a tropical low dumped over six inches on Sunday. Flooding affected streets Audubon Park closed to traffic and the zoo shut down. water nearly reached homes in Marrero while no evacuations were reported. A new low pressure system near Grenada was moving westward with heavy showers and gusty squalls expected in the Windward and Leeward Islands.

Holiday Weekend Traffic Deaths In State Climb

The four day Labor Day holiday period brought six highway fatalities in Louisiana. Chester J. Richard 18 of Lafayette was found on a Breaux Bridge area highway likely killed by a motorist. A Monroe area head on crash killed Myles Scott 56 and Alma 62, and Charles Dawkins 27 of West Monroe. A gasoline tanker truck jackknifed near Baton Rouge killing driver Hampton L. Fontenot 47 of Baker.

Guerrillas Free Jail In Uruguay
