Fragmentary war dispatch notes stabbing incidents amid Romanian and Hungarian clashes. Reports indicate Romanian forces pushing into plains near Hungary, with Prussia rear areas battered as front lines shift.
U S Pacific Fleet reports a five day period of heavy blows against Japan. Thirty ships and 107 planes were destroyed or damaged as advances reached near Tokyo. Mindanao Wake Island and Bonin Volcano actions led a broad assault from August 30 to September 3.

The Roosevelt administration extended seizure of coal mines as strikes continue. Eight additional Pennsylvania pits were seized to keep operating units together, with 14 more mines in Pennsylvania and West Virginia shut down by walkouts affecting about 9,000 workers. The WLB urged union leader John McAlpine to restore labor peace, and Interior Secretary Ickes said seized mines would reopen with workers returning to work next day. The ten already under government control remained in operation.
