Fires across California burned 142000 acres and killed three people as 165 blazes challenged crews from Mother Lode to San Diego. Deputy Shoots Man In Fray In New Orleans Fray

A St. Bernard deputy sheriff shot and killed Ashford Thomas, 60, after he resisted arrest for a traffic violation. Deputy Theodore Everhardt said Thomas grabbed a nightstick while being taken to the parish jail in a police car.

Riot at Clermont ends raid as fans demand liquor during race event

Two Killed In Area Traffic During Labor Day Week

Northeast Louisiana recorded two traffic fatalities during the Labor Day period as state police warned motorists to drive carefully. A 15 year old Monroe boy, Curtis Williams, was killed on U S 165 north when struck by a car driven by Earl Newton. In Concordia Parish L B Brummett of Jackson died when his car left the road.
