A young Buddhist monk sought asylum at the Saigon embassy but was told admission was not possible as the embassy was crowded. He joined three other monks granted asylum, while U.S. officials said they would continue sheltering them. The incident comes amid rising tensions as Saigon plans to seek the return of the four refugees.
Gov. George Wallace withdrew most state troopers from Tuskegee and kept only a guard at the integrated school, ordering classes postponed amid threats of violence. Residents called the move an armed invasion while principals and teachers were turned away.
Hazleton Pa AP David Fellin and Henry Throne left Hazleton State Hospital after a week of treatment for 14 days trapped in a coal mine. They praised rescuers and mourned Louis Bova 34 presumed dead while Fellin pledged to return to the mine if there is any chance of Bova surviving. Fellin said he would rest 24 hours and Throne planned to help his wife run her tavern.
President Kennedy cut short his Hyannis Port holiday and flew from Otis Air Force Base to Andrews Air Force Base amid rising Alabama desegregation tensions. The White House had hinted Labor Day weekend could extend to Wednesday, with Kennedy returning to the summer White House last Thursday.
The Veterans Administration reports that 7,800,000 World War II veterans received education and training through the GI bill, more than half of the 15 million who served in the war.
