Burton Denies Vaughan Interest In Tax Case
William T. Burton of Lake Charles, oilman, told the Times-Picayune he has no knowledge of any interest by Gen. Harry Vaughan in his income tax case. Columnist Drew Pearson testified before the senate five percenters inquiry that Vaughan tried to intervene in a 1945 tax fraud case against Burton. Burton said he never met Vaughan or donated to campaigns in Kansas City or elsewhere. Pearson claimed rumors of large donations to Kansas City Democratic primaries aimed at Burton’s conviction. Burton denied knowledge of Pearson’s claim and recalled his long legal troubles, with two mistrials in 1943 and 1945 on similar charges. He and three others were indicted in January 1946 on conspiracy to influence.

In St Paul Minnesota two young children Franklin Sherer five and Sandra two and a half were found smothered inside an ice box in a neighbor s garage after their parents reported them missing. Police traced the discovery to the neighbor’s home where the mounted ice box doors sealed them off. Fire rescue teams could not save the children and police planned to question playmates about how the doors were closed.

Ouachita Reports 19th Polio Case Found
Ouachita's 19th polio case was reported Friday morning by Dr. Carrol Summer health unit director. A 20 year old woman, Mrs H O Lea of 1700 North Fourth Street, was taken to the New Orleans polio center Wednesday with a mild case. Health boards said schools would open as planned on September 6 with no delay.

Desperado in Florida slain after long manhunt
A knife wielding fugitive, John Calvin Russell, was killed in an orange grove by deputies Bob Spooner and Harvard Frazier after a four day chase across Pinellas County.
