The government of Ivan Pagrianov collapsed after failing to secure neutrality, while an international armistice plan for Bulgaria was drafted by the European advisory commission. Allied pressure includes withdrawal to pre war borders and return of Macedonia and Thrace. fascist elements may be purged. Russian forces push along the northern frontier as rumors spread of Hungary seeking terms and Romania negotiating in Moscow.

Allied forces push through Sedan Verdun area advancing toward the German border on a 270 mile front. Patton’s tanks cover 65 miles in under 24 hours reaching Verdun while Americans pierce toward the Meuse and cross the Argonne forest as Montgomery closes on Calais and Dunkerque.
London reports the fifth anniversary of World War II finds British American and Russian forces closing toward a Berlin junction about 700 miles apart. From Normandy to the Meuse and toward Warsaw, Allied forces tally massive casualties while the Red Army nears Bucharest and advances toward Berlin. American troops near Sedan push toward the German drive’s origin as Italy and southern France add to the toll.
In Bucharest on August 31 1944 1100 American airmen liberated from two camps were given freedom after King Mihai proclaimed an armistice. About 22 Britons among them, their guards and routes through the city described as Soviet troops moved past. The POWs praised the escape from two prisons and noted the hospital wing hit by German bombs.
