U S Marines recaptured The Hook, main objective of a Chinese Red assault that breached Allied lines in Western Korea. A staff officer said the Leathernecks forced back a Communist battalion of 500 to 750 men after heavy fighting with fists, grenades, bayonets and rifle butts.
In Seoul site report, U S Marines recapture the Western Ridgeline after fierce close combat but withdraw from the crest and forward slopes at 8 55 p m following heavy artillery. No immediate sign of Chinese occupation of the high ground.
Maj Gen Pollack urged Marines to keep pushing as air support and ammunition backed them. Chinese forces struck Panmunjom sector, penetrating one end of The Hook, a mile long ridge. About 2,000 attackers swarmed across a three mile front and overran three of five Allied out posts.

A mistrial was declared in the Newman versus Missouri Pacific Rail road case after a jury poll showed nine in favor of the plaintiff and three for the defense. Judge Gaston Porterie ordered the jurors to deliberate after the foreman reported no decision. The panel, consisting of eleven men and two women, had been sequestered overnight. The case centers on the claims brought by Mrs Lucy Emfinger Newman.
John Alden Blair a Monroe resident died suddenly Saturday night after a heart attack. Funeral services were held Monday at Pine Hill Baptist Church Sicily Island with Rev R B Kitchingham officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery under Hall Funeral Home direction. He was born February 17 1885 in Alabama and lived in Louisiana for many years. Survived by five children and seven grandchildren with siblings and other relatives named.
New York AP report notes 11 U S bellwether counties spread across eight states. Editors split seven GOP and four Democrat, with Albany Wyoming Laramie Jasper Palo Alto Vanderburgh Belmont Marion Fayette Strafford Coos cited as barometers. County leanings vary, from Ike strength in Crook and Oregon to Stevenson forecasts in Ohio West Virginia and Pennsylvania.
At the United Nations Assembly in New York, nerves run high as Russia’s position on breaking the Korea war stalemate remains unclear. In Tuxedo Park New York state and local police renewed a search for the slayer of Ramapo town clerk Robert Nugent and Saddle River banker Charles Simpson after two 17 year old squirrel hunters found shotgun blasted bodies in a mountain forest. Investigators noted Nugent issued many hunting licenses and may have recognized the killer, while a deer carcass lay between the victims and their jeep was nearby.
President Truman departs Washington for a final campaign tour with Adlai Stevenson, buoyed by John Lewis's cooperation to end the coal strike. He plans a 4500 mile journey ending in Independence, Missouri, after meeting UMW leaders and coal operators.
Lt. Gov. C. E. Barham said he would not publicly endorse any presidential candidate or take active part in the campaign. Former gubernatorial candidate James E. Rev. Chester S. Cadwallader Jr of College Place Baptist Church resigns after eight years of growth. He and his wife and four children will depart for San Jose Costa Rica for language study then Guatemala for mission work. The church began in 1945 and nears 1000 members with a $100000 educational unit and a $200000 new sanctuary. The congregation will act on his resignation soon.

A Monroe man, C. D. Woods, received a three year sentence in the state penitentiary at Angola after pleading guilty to burglary of Sunset Courts on September 27. Judge Jesse Heard oversaw the Fourth District court. Also before the judge, Jimmy Lee Peters, a Black man, pleaded guilty to disturbing the peace on October 6 and was fined 25 dollars plus costs or 25 days in jail.
