Chinese forces pushed into India from both the northwest and Ladakh fronts. At Towang area Jang near a key pass was attacked, with Indian troops preparing a delaying stand. Western border fighting near Poeet threatened India's sole airfield at Chushul.
Frances Langford co owned Letter Service Bureau Monroe died in a local hospital after months of illness. Funeral services set for 2 p.m. Saturday at First Methodist Monroe with Rev. George W. Harbuck and Rev. James T. Harris officiating. Burial in Greenwood Cemetery Ruston. She resided at 1607 North Fifth Monroe and was a Yazoo City native. She taught in Athens Jonesboro Tallulah before joining her sister in the bureau. Survived by one brother four sisters and several nieces and nephews.
Miami AP report describes John Smiley a 32 year old student pilot who sighted a rattlesnake on final approach while landing. He landed and pinned the snake with a wheel before a field service truck operator killed it.
Chicago briefing to congressmen said Cuba has 30 to 40 missiles ready and sites could fire salvoes of 30 to 40. Soviet technicians continue work on 2,200 mile range launch sites since the quarantine. Senators and representatives indicated uncertainty over warhead status.

Honolulus AP reports the United States exploded a submegaton nuclear device high above the Pacific near Johnston Island in a Thor missile flight. Moscow and Washington ease tension while the United States keeps its blockade and demands removal of missiles. The Soviet defense ministry newspaper warns of retaliatory actions. Premier Khrushchev’s conditional acceptance is seen as prep for UN appearance. Some Soviet ships turn back while the oil tanker Bucharest is stopped but not boarded.
Federal appeals court was told of an agreement between Governor Barnett and the government on James Meredith's admission to the University of Mississippi. The Justice Department said it could prove Barnett lied about such an agreement. Kennedy was quoted saying Barnett planned Meredith to enter at Oxford before changing plan.
Area towns posted a range of lows from 32 degrees in Jonesville to 43 degrees in Monroe. Winnsboro saw 33 degrees with a 10 degree gap to Monroe, 40 miles away. Forecast calls for clear to partly cloudy conditions with lows 38 to 42 tonight and highs 66 to 70 Saturday.
U S Army Corps of Engineers reports the second chlorine filled tank will be raised from the Mississippi River bottom south of Vidalia at 2 p m. Divers cleared sand and driftwood as slings were attached to a strongback. No leak found in the first tank lifted Wednesday after 19 months. If successful, remaining tanks to be surfaced next week to remove a menace endangering 80 000 lives in the region. State police maintain 24 hour alert during operations.
The cost of living rose six tenths of one percent in September marking the largest gain in over four years. The rise was led by higher meat prices after farmers in the Midwest withheld livestock from market, with temporary factors also pushing eggs and clothing prices higher.

Police seized Theodore Smith, 38, a Chess Review clerk, as he re entered his West Side YMCA room. Turner, 38, a master chess player, was found stabbed nine times and his body hidden in a walk in wall safe in a basement laboratory. Smith admitted the murder and said he discarded the knife in Central Park.

The Lebanese flag ship, built in 1943, sails from Riga Latvia.
Finance Commissioner McSherry announced final plans for the apehouse opening at the Monroe 700 on Sunday. Arthur Jones will present exhibitions with zoo director Kit Beecher and Bill Carpenter as part of Day at the Zoo. Proceeds from concessions go to zoo development and tiger house projects with 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. demonstrations every half hour and a voluntary gate contribution.
