Health officers from all states gather in Washington for a two day PHS led session to consider protective steps if fallout reaches acute levels. Dr Francis Weber says no current cause for alarm and most fallout would descend next spring from the Soviet tests.
Subpoenas prepare to summon FBI witnesses including a Washington weapons expert to testify in the first degree murder trial of George York and James Latham in Russell County Kansas. York and Latham are accused of a nationwide killing spree after escaping Fort Hood.

The Lakeview School Board defied the state superintendent and voted to continue using McGuffey Readers first printed in 1879. The board accused Supt. Angus Rothwell of Madison of dictatorial behavior after he requested removal of the readers, which he labeled ancient.
NASA filed court actions in Mississippi and Louisiana to acquire 140000 acres for a ground testing site powering Saturn and Nova class rockets. The plan requires relocation of about 660 families in Pearl River and Hancock counties and St. Tammany Parish. The ground tests would support launches from Cape Canaveral with boosters built at the Michoud plant in New Orleans.
Percy B Fant Jr former News Star World staffer recovering from a heart attack in St Luke's hospital Denver Colo. He left the local paper about ten years ago to join United Press International and now works in the Denver UPI bureau. His wife said recovery would take several months. His parents are Mr and Mrs P B Fant Sr of 304 Austin Avenue West Monroe.
Yugoslav novelist and former diplomat Ivo Andric, 69, receives the 1961 Nobel Prize in Literature worth $48,300. His historical trilogy Miss Travnik Chronicle and The Bridge on the Drina are cited for epic depictions of Bosnia and its people.

A 14 year old boy, Carl Ray Ford of Sharp, died after his head struck a parked dump truck when he stuck out of a school bus window. He was fatally injured near Boyce, about three miles west, and died at Baptist Memorial Hospital. Funeral arrangements were incomplete.

Berlin AP The Friedrichstrasse border crossing was closed by East German police after three U S Army jeeps with armed MPs entered East Berlin for a second straight day. U S tanks and armored vehicles faced East German police as the sedan carrying a civilian American driver moved into the East. The border crossing was reopened only later amid tensions as authorities vowed to end the incident.
President Kennedy may back building public fallout shelters along federal state highways if feasible. The idea, proposed by Sen. Morton, would place large shelters at interchanges and dense areas, with possible inclusion in recommendations to Congress.
